Flying Dog goes to the country with Farmworks Brewery expansion

Did every brewery have a coolship on its Christmas list this year? Beachwood Brewing isn’t the only one to have an experimental sour project on deck for 2015–Flying Dog recently announced plans for Farmworks Brewery, a five-acre, 15-barrel brewhouse, cellar, barrel room and sour beer facility in Lucketts, Va.
Located on Shadow Farm about 17 miles from Flying Dog’s brewery in Frederick, Farmworks will be a distinct facility from Flying Dog focused on experimentation and innovation. Its proximity to Shadow Farm, home to Lucketts Mill Hopworks, means we can expect plenty of wild fermentation and local ingredients. Nearby Luckets Mill is a 10,000-sq.-ft. space that not only grows its own Virginia hops but also is able to process hops from nearby farmers.
When it opens in summer 2015, Flying Dog’s Farmworks will be the latest one-off experimental/sour concept (thankfully without ‘-atorium’ in its name). It joins Wicked Weed’s Funkatorium, Modern Times’ Fermentorium, Beachwood Blendery, The Bruery’s Terreux and Cory King’s (Perennial) Side Project.

Tim Hortons deal is named No. 1 business story of the year

It was a big deal in Western New York, but this year's Burger King-Tim Hortons transaction was even bigger in Canada.

It has, in fact, been named by the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. as the biggest business story of 2014 in that country.

Says the CBC: "It came out of nowhere, and Burger King's $20-billion bet on Canada's Tim Hortons blew away all other business stories this year in terms of the number of clicks. It's often said that Tims is a national institution in Canada, so perhaps the obsession…

Jack and Lydia revealed that they’ve been planning little Jim Beam’s epic name since before they were married. Lydia said, “I’ve always tried to do stuff out of the ordinary, to do things differently than other people. It’s hard to find a name that you like that nobody you know has. It was all Jack‘s idea. I just went along with it.”

A 31 year-old Louisiana man named Jack Daniels Leathers has recently begun to capture the attention of the media for contributing to a tradition of excellence in the field of naming. Jack and his wife Lydia, 23, recently became the proud parents of a beautiful baby boy, on whom they bestowed a name sure to make a million people grin at parties- Jim Beam Leathers.
Jack says that the alcohol-themed naming tradition stated when his mom and dad where inspired by the need to chose a name for him which was sure to anger their own parents. He says it was his dad who was first struck with the idea to name his son after the popular whiskey he was drinking at the time and that his mom jumped on board with the plan.
Jack revealed that growing up sharing his name with a popular alcohol made for some hilarious experiences, especially when he joined the army. “Nobody believed my name until I showed them my ID,” he told his local paper, the Houma Today. “When I went into the Army, sergeants would yell, ‘How much more American can you get than Jack Daniels?’ I went through most of my Army career not hearing my last name because people would call me Jack Daniels.”
Jim Beam arrived on November 14 and can look forward to sharing in the naming fun with any siblings destiny may bring his way. His mom and dad have announced that the next boy born into the family shall be called “Evan Williams” whereas the next girl shall be dubbed “Sherry.”
Believe it or not, the 80 proof excellence doesn’t end with couple’s children. In a hilarious twist of fate, they were even able to locate a Terrebonne Parish Judge named Johnny Walker to preside over their wedding.

According to Eric Shepard, executive editor at Beer Marketer’s Insights, these beers do not share any single explanatory factor. Advertising, for example, is a major component in the success of a brand. However, just as “a lot of the most heavily advertised brands are at the bottom,” Shepard said, brands with little to no advertising are at the among the fastest growers.

American beer sales have followed a downward trend in recent years. After reaching a peak of 219 million barrels in 2008, total U.S. shipments have declined to just 211.7 million barrels in 2013. Yet, the beer industry is by no means dying. While some beer brands have faltered, others have found tremendous success.
Although some of America’s top brewers own some faltering brands, they also own some of the fastest growing ones. Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD), for example, produces Bud Ice, Michelob Ultra, and Stella Artois, all of which shipped considerably more barrels last year than they did in 2008. According to data provided by Beer Marketer’s Insights, American barrel shipments of eight major brands increased by more than 20% between 2008 and 2013. Dos Equis led the beer industry, shipping 116.6% more barrels in 2013 compared to 2008. Modelo Especial, which had the second highest growth rate of barrels shipped over that period, led the industry in nominal terms, shipping nearly 2 million more barrels last year compared to 2008.
As Shepherd explained, some customers have been moving to wine and spirits, while others have been switching to imported beer, particularly Mexican imports. Shipments of Mexican brands Dos Equis and Modelo Especial more than doubled in the five years through 2013. Modelo Especial in particular reflects the growing “power of the Hispanic market,” Shepard said, as it has run little to no english-language advertising.
