Owners Tom Hyland and Rick Lopez met several years back at Morrell & Co. Last summer, over some great wines and food, Tom said "Hey Rick, do you want to open a wine shop together". Rick responded, "absolutely!" One year, a few great lawyers and a liquor license later they opened Gowanus Wine Merchants!

STRAWBERRY-RHUBARB GIN + COCKTAILS TASTING! Friday, July 25, taste Isolation Proof’s seasonal summer gin made with organic upstate strawberries and rhubarb, plus original Small Batch and Ramps Gins. But wait, there’s more! Cory from Method Spirits will also be here pouring his excellent craft vermouths that are as delicious on their own (or with a splash of soda) while effortlessly dispensing deep cocktail knowledge. TOMATO WATER GIN TASTING! Saturday July 12, Come try the best new spirit of 2025 (in our opinion) and meet the guy who created it. Covalle Tomato Water Gin smells like tomatoes on the vine and adds a fresh herbaceous note to cocktails. It’s truly unique and truly remarkable. You’ve gotta try it, which you can do Saturday, 4-7pm.

CHAMPAGNE, OYSTER & VODKA TASTING! Friday, June 27, come out to taste grower champagnes and a local vodka paired with oysters (while they last!). Culch vodka is the inspiration — $1 from every bottle goes to the Billion Oyster Project. And then some outstanding grower champagnes entered the chat. Taste a Grand Cru rosé from house favorite Pertois-Moriset, plus Terre de Solemme Brut, which a true Blanc de Noir, and an exciting Pinot Munier-focused darling of Michelin-starred restaurants from Champagne Ullens. Friday, June 27 5:30-8pm. Tasting is free.

EMPIRICAL SPIRITS TASTING, including DORITOS NACHO CHEESE SPIRIT. Friday, June 13th is your lucky day! Come try the full lineup of their unique spirits: Empirical doesn’t make flavored vodkas or anything like that. All of their spirits are bespoke in support of achieving an evocative flavor. Come try their Cilantro spirit (It crushed in a Margarita), and their other wild spirits like The Plum I Suppose and, of course, the notorious (and uniquely delicious) Doritos Nacho Cheese Spirit, which you really have to try for yourself. (People ask all the time, “Is it good?” Yes, it is VERY good at being what it says it is. Will you like it? Only one way to find out…) FREE TASTING Friday, June 13, 5:30-8pm.

RAMPS GIN TASTING! Friday, May 15, come try a unique taste of Spring: an upstate gin made with wild ramps. Isolation Proof Gin is unique in another way, too: their gin is distilled from whey, a byproduct of dairy production that’s in abundance around their Catskills distillery, making theirs not only a great all-round gin, but sustainable as well. But wait, there’s more. Taste the Ramos and Original Small Batch gins along with our favorite local vermouth. Taste for yourself how sweet vermouth isn’t all that sweet, how a good dry vermouth deserves a larger role in your martini, and how each are delicious lower-ABV drinks topped with seltzer. Friday, May 15 5:30-8pm. Tasting is free, no reservation requires.

MEET PIERRE! Special event Friday April 11. He’s not a winemaker, but these wines are all *his*. Learn how Pierre of Bobo Selections works with winemakers across France to bring heartfelt, environmentally conscious wines to these shores. Taste wines from a Pet Nat made with an ancient French grape and a fascinating collaboration from a Greek Island, to a classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the great 2017 vintage. MUSHROOM GIN TASTING! MEET THE MAKERS. Saturday, March 29, venture into uncharted gin territory with Isolation Proof’s umami-laced Mushroom Gin made with maitake and shiitake mushrooms. Or just enjoy their Original Small Batch and Orchard gins and excellent local vermouths from Method Spirits with a cocktail made from their combined products. Both of the guys who make Isolation Proof and Method vermouth will be on hand to guide you. The gins and vermouths are also NY State products. Isolation Proof is made in a Catskills barn and makes their gins sustainable by distilling whey, a byproduct of the area’s dairy production. Saturday, March 29, 4-7pm. Tasting is free.

MEET THE SPIRIT MAKER! Saturday March 22, meet Bridgette Taylor, founder or Harridan Vodka, the multiple award-winning “Best Vodka” made from organic upstate corn. Harridan means “bossy or belligerent woman,” so don’t expect a typical neutral vodka — this is a bold, flavorful vodka that does a martini proud. Come meet Bridgette, who’ll@have a cocktail you, and talk to her about what it takes to launch your own brand — and taste her extraordinary vodka. March 22, 4-7pm.

In one corner, representing Kentucky, it will be the 8, 10, and 15 year luxury bourbons from Augusta Distillery. In the other corner, representing malt whisky, it will be single malts Springbank 10, Stronachie 10, Cadenhead’s “An Orkney,” and Matsui Mizunara Cask Japanese whisky. Who will win?
