FAMILY SEEKS HELP WITH VETERINARY COSTS AFTER DOG FOUND SHOT AND SEVERELY INJURED
NYXON SURVIVED FOR DAYS BEFORE BEING FOUND MORE THAN FIVE MILES FROM HOME
A local family is seeking donations to help cover emergency veterinary care for Nyxon, a 6-year-old dog who was found alive several days after disappearing and suffering a devastating gunshot wound to the face.
According to Makayla May, Nyxon and another dog belonging to her sister, Marissa May, disappeared from their home following a family dispute on Monday, July 13.
The family believes the dogs may have been intentionally removed from the property and abandoned in the country. However, May acknowledged that the family does not have proof establishing who took the dogs, and no one has admitted responsibility.
SEARCH CONTINUED FOR SEVERAL DAYS
May said Nyxon was shot in the face with a 12-gauge sh***un on the morning of Tuesday, July 14. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been independently verified.
Nyxon was spotted the following day, and police responded, but he reportedly ran before a leash could be secured around him.
The family’s other dog, Dolce, was found unharmed on Thursday, July 16. Nyxon remained missing.
Volunteers continued searching on foot, using four-wheelers, live traps and information from reported sightings. On Friday, July 17, a drone was used to locate Nyxon, but he ran again before searchers could secure him.
After approximately 12 hours without another sighting, the family hired two thermal-drone teams to assist. Volunteers and drone operators searched until approximately 3 a.m. Saturday without locating him.
NYXON FOUND ALIVE ON PORCH
At approximately 3 p.m. Saturday, July 18, Nyxon appeared on a resident’s porch along Fremont Lane.
May said Nyxon had traveled more than five miles and had nearly made it back to town. She arrived within minutes and helped transport him for emergency treatment.
Nyxon was initially taken to Southgate Veterinary Hospital in Vincennes. Because of the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to a specialty veterinary hospital in the Indianapolis area.
The gunshot destroyed most of Nyxon’s lower jaw, and the wound had become infested with maggots during the days he was missing. Despite his condition, the family said he remained alert, wagged his tail and continued fighting to survive.
FAMILY RAISING MONEY FOR SURGERY AND RECOVERY
The family was required to provide a $3,000 emergency deposit to keep Nyxon hospitalized while awaiting evaluation by a surgeon. Community donations covered that initial deposit.
May said the overall cost of Nyxon’s treatment could reach approximately $10,000. Expenses are expected to include surgery, hospitalization and continuing recovery care.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover the remaining veterinary bills. Those unable to donate are encouraged to share Nyxon’s story and keep him and the family in their prayers.
