Herbert is loving all the visitors this season!

You’ll usually find him relaxing on the south side of town with his donkey friends, always hoping someone brings him a handful of buttery popcorn from the Saloon.

This is Herbert’s first season at 1880 Town-South Dakota’s Original, and he’s quickly winning over guests as he takes over the reins from Otis. While Otis has stepped back from greeting visitors, he’s still enjoying life just across the road.

Thanks Chad Coppess for capturing Herbert

New Menu Item Has Arrived!

Have you checked out our 50’ Santa Fe Train Diner lately?

We’re excited to introduce new menu items, including our locally raised buffalo burger. With its rich, bold flavor, buffalo has long been a staple of the Great Plains and is a true taste of South Dakota.

Raised by local ranchers Nic & Samara Campbell, our buffalo burger is a delicious way to experience local ranching while supporting producers right here in our community.

Stop in, try something new, and enjoy a meal inside a piece of railroad history.
Located just off I-90 at Exit 170.

Father’s Day is a celebration of the men who leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

At 1880 Town-South Dakota’s Original, that legacy began with Clarence Hullinger and was carried forward by his son, Richard Hullinger. Together, they shared a vision of preserving the history of the American West, collecting historic buildings, artifacts, and stories that would become the town visitors enjoy today.

Now, another generation has stepped into that role, as Richard’s daughters helps manage the town and continue the family’s commitment to preserving South Dakota’s heritage.

From father to son, and now to daughters, 1880 Town is more than a collection of historic buildings. It is a testament to the importance of family, tradition, and passing on the stories that define us.

This Father’s Day, we honor Clarence, Richard, and all the fathers, grandfathers, and mentors whose hard work and dedication leave a legacy that lives on for generations.

Happy Father’s Day from 1880 Town-South Dakota’s Original.
