Well we sure aren’t ready for school to start back, because we’ll be getting finished with our summer cocktail series (and the traffic will be worst and the parking lots a lot fuller, and…..well….the things that come with being a college town). With a rainy week ahead, today’s cocktail is for an author who wrote a book good enough to be made into a Emmy winning series (15 Emmys to be exact!). So with a rainy final free week before UGA starts back up, you can pair this cocktail with a great book or an awesome series! This cocktail is for Margaret Atwood. She is a Canadian novelist, poet, literary critic, and inventor. Since 1961, she has published 18 books of poetry, 18 novels, 11 books of nonfiction, nine collections of short fiction, eight children’s books, two graphic novels, and a number of small press editions of both poetry and fiction. You’ll know her work “The Handmaid’s Tale” (1985), and if you don’t know it, you should. Handmaids Tale is a riveting tale that explores themes that seem oh too close to issues of our own society today. Atwood is still alive and kicking and is quite an amazing speaker of the issues for which she stands for, so she is well deserving of a cocktail in her name! So here it is.

The Margarita Atwood

* 1 oz fresh lime juice
* 2 oz premium silver tequila
* 2 oz pomegranate juice
* 3/4 oz triple sec
* 3/4 oz simple syrup
* Lime wheel for garnish
* Lime wedge to rim glass
* Margarita salt
* Ice

Instructions:
Use lime to line glass rim for moisture for margarita salt to adhere to. Dip in margarita salt to coat rim in salt. In shaker, add ice and all wet ingredients. Shake well. Strain and pour into salt rimmed glass over fresh ice. Garnish with lime wedge. Enjoy!

Sunday cocktail anyone? If you’ve been following along, we’ve been doing a summer series of cocktails that are meant to honor female literary greats by pairing these cocktails with their books! We’ve been inspired by “Buzzworthy: Cocktails Inspired by Literary Greats” by and illustrated by . This cocktail today is from this book, with this week’s author being Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She is one of the most prominent African writers of contemporary fiction. She is best known for her novel, “Americanah” (2013), which explores how Americans view Blackness through the tale of a Nigerian woman who finds fame in the U.S. and if you’re a Beyoncé fan, part of Adichie’s TED Talk from 2013, “We should all be feminists” was sampled on Flawless. Pretty cool right? A wonderful author that needs a pretty killer cocktail. Let’s go!

Sunday cocktail Sunday!! If you aren’t keeping up, we’ve been making cocktails that honor female literary greats! This means you can snag one of their books to read on as you sip a delicious cocktail that is dedicated to their literary genius. Today we’ll be heading back to one of our favorite cocktail books, and one that inspired this series, “Buzzworthy: Cocktails Inspired by Female Literary Greats” by and illustrated by . Today’s cocktail is for author Amy Tan. You may have read her hit novel “The Joy Luck Club” (1989), while in high school, but if not, it’s one that you should definitely read. Tan is know for her novels which show Chinese American women and immigration experience. By bravely exploring experiences of immigrant families, heritage, memories, and poignant struggles, Amy Tan’s works are very important in expanding our knowledge of other perspectives within the American family portrayal. So here’s the cocktail that is dedicated to her and her amazing works!

The Amy Tan:

Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 oz of white rum (we used )
- 6 raspberries
- 3/4 oz of Campari ( )
- 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
- Garnish: lime peel

Instructions:
Add white rum and raspberries to shaker. Muddle very well. Add other ingredients, add ice, and shake. Strain in glass then garnish with lime peel (can carve into a leaf shape for more pizazz). Enjoy!

You’re gonna need a bigger glass. If you didn’t know it, it’s the 50th anniversary of Jaws (1975). The shark movie that changed how we see blockbuster movies and maybe even how we view the ocean, this movie is being celebrated by many companies, so we were excited to see a brewery make a celebratory brew. Amity Beer by is a premium lager that is scary good, just like the movie it honors. If you like a beer that has no nonsense and is just an easy crushable brew, this is it. It’s absolutely fantastic to grab a 6-pack of, grab some grub, and have a night in, watching Jaws.

With everyone being back from a holiday weekend, Monday seems like a good day to do our weekly cocktail recipe. This summer we have been making cocktails that honor female literary greats! This week’s cocktail is a shout out to an author that almost all of us know, simply for our required reading from middle school or high school. S.E. Hinton is the author of “The Outsiders”, “That Was Then, This is Now”, “Rumble Fish”, and many others. “The Outsiders” is the book we think of most from this author (or perhaps you think of the 1983 film, featuring alllll the 80s heartthrobs) and is one many of us read in school, which taught us the pointlessness behind violence, and the importance in being true to yourself, innocent, uncorrupted, unblemished, or simply “Staying Gold”. S.E. Hinton began writing that book when she was 15 years old, and was 18 when it was published. Her career continues today, as, the now 76 year old author, still writes today, but has switched to writing more towards younger audiences. An author who has touched so many lives from her writings deserves a good cocktail. So here we go,

The OutCiders
- 1.5 oz of gin (we used )
- 1 oz apple cider
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- 0.75-1 oz of lemon juice
- Ginger ale
- Apple slice for garnish

Instructions:
In shaker with ice, add gin, apple cider, simple syrup, and lemon juice. Shake until well mixed, strain into glass with fresh ice. top with ginger ale. Garnish with apple slice. Enjoy! 🍎

Sunday cocktail time!!! This summer we’ve been doing cocktails to recognize female literary greats. This cocktail is not from the book we’ve been following for our past posts, being one we found online that aligned perfectly with author Harper Lee. Born Nelle Harper Lee, on April 28, 1926, Harper Lee is an American author best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird”. Hopefully everyone knows of the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird”, which for many of us was required reading in school. Today the novel is considered a banned book in several states, which may have many of us scratching our heads in confusion. The novel is excellent, exploring the theme of loss of innocence as the children, Scout and Jem, grow up and confront the harsh realities of racism and injustice in their community. A book that hits close to home in the social climate of today, Harper Lee still is making a difference with her most beloved novel today. So in honor of her we have the perfect cocktail.

Tequila Mockingbird

Ingredients:
-1 slice of jalapeno
-3 watermelon cubes (fresh, each about 1 inch cubed)
-2 oz tequila blanco (we used )
-3/4 oz lime juice
-3/4 oz agave syrup

Muddle jalapeño slice and watermelon cubes at the bottom of shaker to extract the juices. Pour in tequila, lime juice, and agave syrup with a scoop of ice. Shake well until chilled. Fine strain into rocks glass over fresh ice. (Optional: garnish with watermelon and/or jalapeño slice). Enjoy!
