Asheville Wine Market

Asheville Wine Market Asheville, NC's best curated selection of local-global artisanal wines -- Always with focus on local and regional importers and distributors

In 1993, Eb and Jean Heide opened a wine shop in downtown Asheville committed to the idea that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a great bottle of wine. Over twenty years later, now under the ownership of long time employee Laurence Weaver, that sentiment hasn’t changed. The Asheville Wine Market is still excited to be offering great wines at a great price, with an enthusiastic staff at th

e ready to help you find just the right bottle for your meal or occasion. We love talking about wine almost as much as we love to drink it, and hold firmly to the belief that wine is made to be enjoyed by everyone. After all, good wine is good wine, whether it costs $10 or $100. It’s the wine itself that interests us, as well as your enjoyment of it, not the price tag. At the AWM, we specialize in bringing you high quality wines (at a reasonable price, of course) from independent, often family-run, vignerons. To do this, we travel the world, meeting the growers and producers, deciding what wines are right for our customers, and then working with small, locally-rooted importers and distributors to get the wine across whatever ocean it needs to get across in order to make it to our humble shop. These AWM “Hand-Picked Selections” represent wines exclusive to us that we are proud and excited to be bringing to the Asheville market. Our work doesn’t end when the wine arrives, though. We’ve worked hard to develop relationships with our customers, learning their likes and dislikes, and tailoring our recommendations to their preferences. We’re not just going to sell the same bottle to everyone. We’re only going to sell you wine that we’re sure you’re going to love, and that fits comfortably within your budget. Also, we’re going to have fun while we do those things. We’re pretty sure you will, too. We’re here because we love wine. We love drinking wine. We love talking about wine. We love listening to other people talk about wine while we are drinking wine. Our education-based approach to wine sales is based on the hope that the more people get excited about wine, the more Asheville wine culture will have the opportunity to expand and grow, and we would like to contribute to that goal. The wine world is a big place, and there are many local importers and distributors working hard to bring us glimpses of it in the form of wine from small, independent vignerons expressing their individual region’s unique cultural traditions. It’s Local meets Global, and we’re proud to be a part of it. (Or, It’s a Global perspective on supporting Local, and we’re proud to be a part of it.)

*We’re a Living Wage certified shop. Everyone here is paid a living wage
*Members of the Asheville Grown Business Alliance
*We prefer to deal with and support local, community based small and independent business. We don’t just talk about that… we do it!
*We actively support the local farming community with financial contributions personally and on a business level.
*“Local Global” is more than a catch-phrase sound byte for us. We are adamant about supporting and sourcing from local and independent counterparts from around the globe. We prefer real wine, made by real people, wine from farmers, not lab technicians.
*We’re wine geeks, not wine snobs. If you love wine, or well, even just like wine, we’re your friend.
*When you come see us at the shop, please remember, there’s no such thing as a stupid question. The world of wine can be quite intimidating but we’re here to provide friendly answers to ANY questions.

Our first Local Roots Tasting of 2026 lands this Wednesday, March 25. Think of our big seasonal Open Houses as wide-angle previews, and think of these Local Roots tastings as the slower, deeper dive. More time to taste, talk, and ask questions in an easygoing setting.

This month, we're featuring Jason Tippetts of Barrique Imports. Jason works with small, independent vignerons who farm responsibly and make wine with care and integrity. His portfolio features thoughtful selections, built around growers who let terroir do the talking and heavy lifting. It's exactly the kind of local partnership we love: connecting the AWM shelves to independent, family estates across the globe.

We'll have 10-12 of Jason's wines open, and we feel they're some of the best available in Western North Carolina. Drop in anytime; these tastings are free for locals and email subscribers, and there's no RSVP required. Taste, compare notes, and talk shop with Jason about vino, vineyards, vignerons, and get the first heads-up of what's on the way.

Every wine will be available for purchase or pre-order at special event pricing. If you want to see the AWM Local-Global ethos in action, featuring our favorite local and regional partners, who thoughtfully source seriously delicious wine, this is it.

Bonus: We'll also have this week's three best-buy newsletter features from Portugal open to taste.

AWM Wine Diners are fun, easygoing evenings built around great food, great wine, and wonderful company—and they remain one of the best values for a night out in Asheville. If you haven’t joined us before, this is a great chance to enjoy an evening out, make some new friends, and enjoy a relaxed meal built around locally sourced wines and thoughtful food pairings.

February’s wine dinner once again brings together two central elements of the AWM ethos: sharing wines we believe in and working with local importers and distributors. We’re teaming up as we often do, with our friend Chris from Rise over Run, pouring some favorites from his portfolio, together with our own AWM Hand-Picked selections.

Chef Adam Thome from next door at 67 Biltmore has put together another superb menu built around traditional pairings from each country. We also love that Adam is so adept at folding in as many locally sourced ingredients as possible, a nice reminder that, in addition to the AWM, 67 Biltmore, and Rise over Run, AWM Wine Dinners supports an even wider circle of nearby growers, producers, and small businesses.

Join us this Wednesday, February 18, 6-8 pm, for our annual Winter Open House Customer Appreciation Tasting and Sale. There's no better way to shake off those winter blues. It's a terrific opportunity to meet new people and catch up with old friends -- while scoping out the latest AWM Hand-Picked Selections.

The evening will be packed with 30-plus wines that provide a nearly direct link between the vineyard, winemaker, and AWM customers. These producers have become great friends over the years -- some even like family, and it's a thrill and privilege for me to present their wines.

In addition to my personally sourced Reds, Whites, and Rosé, our favorite local suppliers will be on hand to showcase some of their special selections.

If you have yet to attend one of our Open House Tastings, here's what you need to know:
--Open House Tastings are casual, drop-in events where you can sample 30 or more wines before purchasing.
--Admission is free, all local and regional AWM customers are welcome, and reservations are not required.
--Can you bring friends, neighbors, and relatives? Absolutely!
--20% Discount on wine by the case -- please note this does not apply to Email Newsletter Insider Deals or any other wine already discounted or on sale.

We look forward to seeing everyone here!

AWM customers know that when the label reads Guillaume Gonnet and has a bird on it, the wine in the bottle will be delicious!

Guillaume and Kelly Gonnet are long-time friends of the AWM, and their Bird wines have been a staple at the shop for the last ten-plus years. They have an incredible passion for Rhône varietals, and I'm beyond delighted that we can share their passion in Western North Carolina.

Guillaume comes from a long line of celebrated winemakers and viticulturists and has been deeply influenced by his family's lengthy history in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Kelly delivers a unique and imaginative perspective shaped by her Australian background in the New World. They collaborated to create the Bird Wines, combining Old and New World inspirations while balancing classic Rhône tradition with innovation.
