THE AMERICAN CIGAR LOUNGE

Good conversation. A slower pace. And a tradition that has managed to hang around.

There are fewer places left where nobody seems particularly interested in how quickly you can leave.

They’re all different experiences, but there is something I’ve noticed in each of them.

People stay.

They sit down. They talk. Sports turns into work. Work turns into retirement. Somebody starts talking about travel. Someone tells a story. Before long, people who didn’t know each other when they walked in are having a conversation.

And that got me interested in the history behind these rooms.

I ended up discovering a story that goes much deeper than ci**rs.

In the old cigar factories of places like Tampa’s Ybor City, workers sometimes pooled their own money to hire someone called a lector. He would sit above the factory floor and read aloud while everyone worked—newspapers, politics, novels and stories.

I had never heard that before.

Long before podcasts, earbuds and satellite radio followed us through the workday, rooms full of cigar makers were listening to someone tell them what was happening in the world.

There’s also an incredible amount of craftsmanship behind the tradition. Growing the to***co, curing it, fermenting it, aging it and eventually putting the finished cigar into the hands of someone who knows how to roll it properly can take years.

You don’t have to be a cigar smoker to appreciate that part of the story.

Maybe the cigar lounge has survived because we’ve lost so many places where adults simply sit and talk.

The neighborhood tavern. The lodge hall. The corner diner. The old barber shop. Places where nobody needed an agenda and conversations happened almost accidentally.

We’ve never been more connected technologically, yet sometimes it feels like we’ve never had fewer places to simply sit across from somebody and have a conversation.

Maybe that’s why these rooms still have a place.

A comfortable chair. Some music in the background. A few familiar faces. A couple of strangers. And absolutely no reason to rush.
