. WRAPPER - 60-80% of what the customer thinks they taste
It's the outside leaf, the most expensive to grow because it has to be perfect. It's thin, oily, and touches the palate first, so it sets expectations.
How to explain it:
• Connecticut Shade (tan, silky): "This is your creamy, smooth starter. Think coffee with cream, light cedar, almonds. Great if you like mild."
• Habano / Ecuador Habano (milky chocolate brown): "A little more spice and sweetness. Black pepper, leather, a little caramel. This is our most popular."
• Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro & San Andres Maduro (dark, oily): "Dark doesn't mean strong - it means sweet. Fermented longer so you get dark chocolate, espresso, molasses. Very rich."
• Candela (green): "Grassy, sweet, retro. We keep a few for curiosity."
Sales line: "If you like the flavor in the first inch, that's the wrapper talking. Tell me what you like there and I'll keep you in that family."
2. BINDER - 10-15% flavor, 100% performance
One leaf that holds the filler together. Customer never sees it, but if it's bad the cigar tunnels, canoes, or goes out.
It's usually a thicker, elastic leaf from the same region - Dominican Olor, Mexican San Andres Negro, Nicaraguan Criollo.
How to explain it: "The binder is the construction crew. It doesn't add a lot of flavor, but it controls the burn and how much smoke you get. A good binder is why this one burns straight for 45 minutes without touching it up."
Staff tip: Use this when someone complains about a cheap cigar burning hot or uneven. That's a binder problem.
3. FILLER - The actual blend and strength
This is 3-5 long leaves folded inside. This is where the blender builds strength and complexity.
Teach your staff the 3 positions - customers love this:
• Seco (bottom of plant): Lightest, best burner. Gives aroma and combustion. Cedar, nuts, bread.
• Viso (middle): Medium strength, flavor backbone. This is where you get leather, cocoa, earth.
• Ligero (top, gets most sun): Slowest burning, most ni****ne and power. Pepper, espresso, strength. A blender adds or removes Ligero to go from medium to full.
And origin = personality:
• Dominican filler: Smoother, creamy, approachable
• Nicaraguan filler: Spicy, peppery, bolder
• Honduran filler: Earthy, robust
How to close with it:
Instead of asking "mild, medium, or full?" try:
"Do you want creamy and smooth today, or rich and sweet?"
If creamy -> point to Connecticut Shade wrapper + Dominican filler
If rich/sweet -> Maduro wrapper
If spicy/bold -> Habano wrapper + Nicaraguan Ligero-heavy filler
Then: "The first third will be mostly wrapper, second third the Viso kicks in, final third you'll feel that Ligero strength. If you like that evolution, you'll want this one again."
Want me to build you a one-page staff cheat sheet with your top 8 ci**rs broken down by wrapper/binder/filler and a 20-second pitch for each?
