I used to feel like a bad Oregonian. Pinot Noir was not my favorite wine. In fact, it was pretty low on the list. I am just learning that I have been drinking the wrong Pinot Noir!
On Wednesday mornings, I meet with one of our wine sales representatives. For me, it's weird to be trying wine at 10am in the morning and I usually just have a sip, swoosh and spit.(I feel like a real pro doing this!) This last Wednesday, things changed. Our sales person brought in a vertical flight(three different consecutive years from the same vineyard) of an Oregon Pinot Noir. All three years were absolutely delicious. There was no spitting. In fact, when the salesperson ran out to their car for another sample, I poured a glass...that I drank...at 10am....on a Wednesday. It was that good.
Do you want to know what is even better? After thinking about this wine all week, it was offered to us at a price I could not refuse! My order arrives Friday, June 6 and it will be for sale by the bottle on the bar starting Friday night.
So what is this magic elixir? 2016, 2017 and 2018 Battle Creek Yamhela Vineyard Pinot Noir from the Yamhill-Carlton AVA(growing region). What makes this wine so good? Definitely the amazing quality of the grapes from the vineyard. Definitely the skilled hands of the wine maker,Sarah Cabot, who has been making ultra premium "boutique" wines for over 12 years AND plays full contact football for the Oregon Ravens. And definitely because it has been in the bottle for over 5 to 7 years aging gracefully!
These vintages are pretty much off the market and are a treasure just because of their rarity. If you knew someone at the winery they may be able to pull one of these out of a back room. We have two cases of each vintage!
I always hate talking money. I wish that every bottle fit comfortably into every budget. Well, this red wine has so much vineyard, skilled handling and time to gently age, that it could be expensive. Our price is $40 a bottle and is worth every penny. The winery is selling the 2019 vintage for $62 a bottle that really needs to age a few more years. If a splurge bottle is in your future or if this price is in your wheelhouse, stop by and pick up a bottle and savor!
