What’s in a name?
In Britain every pub has a name, and every name has a story. Some of the most popular pub name's have stories that date back centuries. Signs used elaborate paintings that depicted these stories to help drinkers recognise the pub, as most people could not read or write.
The Red Lion is officially the most popular pub name in the UK, as it features in most royal coats of arms. Other common names include The White Hart named after King Richard II and The Plough named after local farmers. The Crossed Keys represents the keys to heaven as held by St Peter, whilst The Talbot is named after a breed of hunting dog. An example of a more unique name is The Drunken Duck, which recalls the time a leaking beer barrel was enjoyed to excess by the ducks in the yard!
At Imperial Pint we want to share this tradition with the people we meet in Taiwan. So why The Black Moustache?
The key is the location of the pub; Lingtan Street. Lingtan is the original name of Longtan and refers to the lingjiao (water chestnuts) that once covered the surface of the lake. When Ryan (founder of Imperial Pint) arrived in Longtan he saw many vendors by the roadside with pictures of lingjiao on their signs. Not knowing what they were, he mistook them for some kind of moustache grooming service! As The Queen's Head is also a popular pub name, we chose a lingjiao moustached Queen Elizabeth II to be our royal representative in Longtan! Her majesty welcomes you to The Black Moustache!
