This Brut Nature cuvée from Maison Rémi Leroy is based on the same blend as the Extra-Brut, but with two differences: this one benefits from special bottle ageing, with each bottle corked to resuspend the lees, and extended ageing on laths.
This Brut Nature is made predominantly from Pinot Noir (70%), a third from Chardonnay (20%) and a touch of Meunier (10%). The grapes come from Meurville in the Côte des Bar.
The vineyard, which is around twenty years old, is situated on hillsides, but the special feature of the Meurville cru is the very poor clay-limestone soils with a shallow layer of soil. On such soils, where the vines naturally have to suffer to ensure their growth, the viticulture practised by Rémy produces remarkably distinctive fruit and juices. The fine, airy nose reveals notes of spices, white fruit and brioche. The palate is fresh, structured, balanced and creamy. The finish is taut and persistent.
