Friday Facts | What Do 6oz, 10oz and GSM Actually Mean?

Ever wondered what 6oz, 10oz, or 300 GSM means when you're choosing a canvas bag?

Here's the simple explanation:

👜 Ounces (oz) measure the weight of the fabric per square yard. The higher the ounce, the thicker and sturdier the canvas.

📏 GSM (Grams per Square Metre) is the metric version of the same idea. A higher GSM also means a heavier, more durable fabric.

As a general guide:
• 6oz (≈200 GSM) – Lightweight, ideal for giveaways and promotions.
• 8oz (≈270 GSM) – Great all-round everyday tote.
• 10oz (≈340 GSM) – Stronger and more durable for shopping and corporate gifts.
• 12oz+ (≈400 GSM and above) – Premium quality, designed for heavier loads and long-term use.

Back in 2012, D'Arts and Designs produced 1,600 conference bags for the 9th Healthcare Quality Improvement Conference organised by Singapore's Ministry of Health.

What started as a one-off conference bag quickly became one of our most loved designs. Its clean, timeless look and practical size made it a favourite—not just for this event, but for many other brands in the years that followed.
