Growing up in a small town in Bohol, Crispina Sarate Singh was no stranger to the natural beauty of her environment. Her childhood memories were filled with scenes of her father burning madre de cacao wood to make charcoal, an additional source of income for their family. While she understood the necessity of this livelihood, she couldn't help but feel regret whenever she saw those sturdy pieces of wood reduced to blackened remnants. Deep inside, she believed there had to be a better way to make use of these precious resources.
It wasn't until she met her partner, Narinder, that her childhood musings found a purpose. Narinder introduced the idea of creating handmade wooden earrings for the African-American market, sparking a newfound passion in her. Inspired by this venture, she eagerly learned the craft, discovering the beauty that lay hidden in those overlooked wood scraps. With dedication and hard work, they poured their efforts into transforming small excesses of wood into intricate and captivating fashion pieces. However, their initial attempt at exporting did not go as planned. Undeterred, she, together with her cousin Virgilio, shifted their focus to the local market, determined to make a name for themselves.
This shift in strategy proved to be a breakthrough for Crissander Enterprises. With persistence and creativity, they built a reputation for quality wooden accessories. Their turning point came when the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recognized their potential provided support in product marketing, product development and business managements. A significant milestone came in October 2016 when two of Crissanderโs products were handpicked for the Analyst Choice at the prestigious Global Sources Fashion Show in Hong Kong. Further support from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) enabled Crissander to acquire modern equipment, improving their productivity and efficiency.
Today, Crissander Enterprises has expanded its product line to include fashion accessories, souvenirs, housewares, awards, corporate and wedding giveaways, trophies, and plaques. Their products are readily available at the OTOP Store - Alturas, OTOP Store โ ICM, OTOP Store โ Ayala, Loboc Tourism Complex, and MOADTO Strip. They also actively participate in numerous local, regional, and national trade fairs, including the Sandugo Regional Fair, Manila Fame, National Trade Fair, National Arts Fair, Kultura Fest, and other regional and provincial fairs across the Visayas and Mindanao.
Crissanderโs journey is a testament to perseverance and innovation. From witnessing wood scraps being turned into charcoal to transforming those scraps into sought-after fashion pieces, she has proven that beauty can emerge from even the simplest materials. With renewed confidence and a growing clientele, Crissander Enterprises has once again ventured into the export market, armed with improved skills, better equipment, and a deeper understanding of their craft. They continue to thrive, driven by a mission to celebrate Filipino creativity while empowering local communities through sustainable craftsmanship.
