My Personal Reflection on the Toxic Filipino
Culture : "Utang na Loob / Debt of Gratitude"
As a Filipino, I have grown up witnessing the pervasive influence of the debt of gratitude in our culture. It is a concept deeply ingrained in our society, where acts of kindness and favors are expected to be repaid. However, I have come to realize that this cultural norm can sometimes become toxic, placing unnecessary burdens on individuals and hindering genuine relationships. In this personal reflection, I would like to share my thoughts on this issue and propose a shift towards a more loving and respectful approach.
In my experience, the debt of gratitude has often created an unspoken obligation to reciprocate every act of kindness. While gratitude is indeed a beautiful virtue, it should not be used as a tool to manipulate or control others. Instead, acts of kindness should be done out of love and genuine care, without expecting anything in return.
Growing up, I have witnessed countless instances where individuals felt trapped by this cultural expectation. They would go to great lengths to repay favors, even if it meant sacrificing their own well-being or happiness. This toxic cycle perpetuates a sense of indebtedness that can strain relationships and create unnecessary stress.
It is important to remember that acts of kindness should be driven by love, not by the expectation of repayment. When we do something for someone out of love, the deed itself becomes a form of repayment. Love has the power to heal, to bring joy, and to strengthen relationships. By acting with love, we can create a culture where repayment is not expected, but where respect and appreciation are valued.
In conclusion, the toxic Filipino culture of debt of gratitude can be detrimental to our well-being and relationships. It is time for us to shift our perspective and embrace a more loving and respectful approach. Let us remember that acts of kindness should be done out of love, without expecting anything in return. With love, the deed itself becomes a form of repayment. If not reciprocated, at the very least, let us offer respect and appreciation. By fostering a culture of love and respect, we can create a society that thrives on genuine connections and mutual support.
Cheers to optimism and spontaneity 🥂🙏
Godspeed🙏🙏🙏
