Ilocos region is known for its handloom-woven textile or abel-iloko. It is made of “kapas” or cotton but is now woven mostly with polyester or a mix of both polyester and cotton.

With the rise of new ideas in the field of fashion, abel-Iloko showed potential in evolving itself into accessories that showcases cultural consciousness. At present, it is no longer limited as a fabric used for clothing and blanket but is now also being used in making other local products because of its durability and intricate patterns.

As we celebrate “Made in the Philippines Week”, we look into local products and innovations highlighting our handloom-woven textile such as the featured photo of an abel-iloko handbag. In this way, we continue to raise awareness and give value to our culture and identity in the midst of changing times.

Abel-iloko weaving implements are currently on exhibit at the Padre Burgos House at the National Museum of the Philippines - Ilocos (Vigan City, Ilocos Sur). We are open to the public every day from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Admission is free.
