Eight festivals, 500 performers, one Baguio morning you shouldn’t miss!

BAGUIO CITY — If you have been meaning to explore the Cordillera but never seem to find the time, here's your chance to enjoy eight of its festivals without leaving Baguio.
And yes, you can do it all in one morning.

On Saturday, October 17, more than 500 performers from the region's six provinces and two cities will take over the streets for the fifth Cordillera Festival of Festivals, bringing their music, dances, colorful attire, and community traditions to the heart of the city.

The celebration starts at 8 a.m., with a street parade leading to a cultural showcase on Upper Session Road, near Post Office Park. 

For Baguio residents, it is a rare opportunity to see celebrations usually held in different provinces, sometimes hundreds of kilometers apart, without packing a bag or planning a long road trip.

And these are not eight versions of the same festival.

Abra brings the Kawayan Festival, Apayao the Say-am Festival, Benguet the Bindiyan of Kabayan, Ifugao the Gotad ad Ifugao, Kalinga the Tachok-Salip, and Mountain Province the Lang-ay, featuring the Pasuk-ey tradition. Baguio City joins with Panagbenga, while Tabuk City presents Gabbok.

Each carries its own stories, customs, and ways of celebrating community life. 
Department of Tourism- Cordillera Administrative Region Office Regional Director Jovita Ganongan said the event is intended to help people appreciate the traditions and heritage of the region's indigenous communities, not merely watch a colorful performance.

Now in its fifth year, the festival has been held in Baguio since 2022, although tourism officials are considering rotating future editions among the region's provinces and cities.

The celebration is also attracting visitors from outside the region. Around 50 balikbayans are expected to join a four-day caravan covering Ifugao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, and Baguio to experience local destinations and cultural practices.

But locals need not travel far to join the fun.
The parade will begin along Harrison Road, pass through Magsaysay Avenue and Session Road, and end near Post Office Park on Upper Session Road, where the main stage will be set up. 

So bring your family, invite your friends, grab your morning coffee, and find a good spot along the route. Come for the lively performances, but stay for the stories behind them.

After all, how often do we get to experience so much of the Cordillera in one Saturday morning?

Reporting note: The published parade advisory confirms the 8 a.m. start and route. Participants will assemble at Melvin Jones before proceeding through Harrison Road and Session Road to the Post Office Park. The city has also announced road closures on October 16–17, so spectators should expect traffic adjustments.

𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗺𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗶 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀

The public is being warned of smuggled broccoli currently sold at the local markets of La Trinidad and nearby Baguio City. According to the Cordillera Broccoli Traders and Farmers Association, the illegally imported broccoli has uniform sizes, neatly cut bottom (flower cut), and no stems— features that distinguish it from the locally grown broccoli.

The group stated that because the smuggled broccoli did not go through proper screening, it may be treated with preservatives or chemicals to prolong shelf life, posing potential health risks to consumers.

According to Augusta Balanoy of the League of Associations at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post, the sample smuggled broccoli in photo arrived in the municipality on Sept. 4, and as of Sept. 21, it still looked fresh side by side with the local broccoli which was harvested on Sept. 20 and arrived at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post on the early morning of Sept. 21.

The farmers and traders group maintain that Benguet grown broccoli is fresher, safer, and harvested without long storage or transport.

Also, the illegally imported broccoli and other highland vegetables continue to threaten the livelihood of not only Benguet farmers but nearby farmers from the Cordillera, which affects local economy.

The League of Associations at the La Trinidad Vegetable Trading Post stated that along with the entry of illegal broccoli, the highland vegetable industry is still suffering from the effects of smuggled carrots that flooded various public markets in the country. Thus, a stronger coordination among the agencies, LGUs, and the consumers are needed to combat this growing problem on vegetable smuggling.

The municipal government is currently working with the various farmers-traders groups, together with the Department of Agriculture Cordillera, to rally other LGUs in battling the illegal entry of these highland vegetables. Samples of the illegally imported vegetable will undergo laboratory testing to determine its contents.

The public is urged not to patronize these smuggled vegetables. Please report any observation of these illegally imported broccoli at the various public markets to this page or to the proper authorities.

KENNON ROAD TRAVEL ADVISORY

Kennon Road is now 𝐏𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 to the general public but strictly for light vehicles only, with a 𝐌𝐀𝐗𝐈𝐌𝐔𝐌 𝐋𝐎𝐀𝐃 𝐋𝐈𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐎𝐅 𝟓 𝐓𝐎𝐍𝐒.

Heavy vehicles are advised to take alternate routes:
• Marcos Highway
• Asin–Nangalisan–San Pascual–La Union Boundary Road

𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒:
• Closed at Acrow Bridge under K0223+020, Sitio Camp 2, Brgy. Twin Peaks, Tuba, Benguet
• One Lane at Detour Road (Camp 2)

In case continuous heavy rainfall prevails, Kennon Road may be temporarily closed to 𝐍𝐎𝐍-𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 to ensure the safety of motorists and the traveling public.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution, monitor weather and road conditions, and strictly observe all traffic and safety regulations while traveling.

⚠️ PUBLIC ADVISORY | TWO MAJOR ROADS LEADING TO BAGUIO TEMPORARILY IMPASSABLE

The public is advised that two major roads leading to and from Baguio City are currently NOT PASSABLE due to the continuing heavy rains that have triggered road hazards in several areas.

🔴 KENNON ROAD – NOT PASSABLE due to continuous soil and rockfalls, with the possibility of further slope failures.
🔴 NAGUILIAN ROAD – NOT PASSABLE due to landslide.

🟡 ASIN–NANGALISAN-SAN PASCUAL ROAD is still passable but is being closely monitored due to the prevailing weather conditions and the possibility of additional road hazards.

🟢 MARCOS HIGHWAY (ASPIRAS-PALISPIS HIGHWAY) remains the only accessible major route to and from Baguio City at this time.

The Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera Administrative Region (DPWH-CAR) continues to closely monitor the affected areas and undertake clearing and response operations, as conditions permit.

Motorists and the traveling public are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel, exercise extreme caution, and strictly follow road closure notices and instructions from authorities. With the continuing heavy rains, road conditions may change rapidly and additional hazards may occur.

Please prioritize safety. Do not risk crossing closed or unsafe road sections.
