Itās not Scotch, Itās not Bourbon, Itās Jack. Happy International Tennessee Whiskey Day.
Tennessee Whiskey 101
Similar to bourbon, Tennessee whiskey must be:
- comprised of at least 51% corn.
- Matured in new, charred, oak barrels.
- Distilled at least 160 proof (80% ABV), barreled at no higher than 125 proof (62.5% ABV), and bottled at least 80 proof (40% ABV).
What Makes it different?
- It must be made in Tennessee (unlike bourbon, which can be made anywhere in the United States.)
- The liquid must undergo the Lincoln County Process - a crucial requirement for Tennessee Whiskeys in which the fresh distillation is filtered through charcoal.
