Prescott's Garages has been part of Hikuai since the 1930s.

What started as a small local garage has grown and changed a fair bit over the years.

In the early days, the Prescott family ran bus services, taxis and freight transport, as well as the garage, helping keep people and goods moving around the Coromandel.

In 1983, the business became a John Deere dealership, expanding into tractors and agricultural machinery.

Then in 1996, Prescott's moved to its current location on the corner of SH25 and Hikuai Settlement Road, with a new workshop, service station and store.

Today, we're still a family-owned and operated business, with three generations of the Prescott family having been involved over the years.

Things have certainly changed since the 1930s, but we're proud to still be here in Hikuai, looking after our local community.

Summer is on its way, and it might be a dry one here in the Coromandel!

NIWA's latest outlook suggests warmer temperatures and a higher chance of below-normal rainfall heading into summer.

A little garden prep now can make a big difference when the heat arrives. 🌿

💧 Mulch your garden beds. A good layer of mulch helps keep moisture in the soil and protects plant roots from the heat.

🌱 Water deeply, less often. Encourage plants to develop deeper roots rather than relying on frequent light watering.

🌳 Get planting now. Give new plants time to establish their roots before the hottest weather arrives.

A little chainsaw maintenance goes a long way. 🪚

Sawdust, oil and debris build up quickly around the bar, sprocket and side cover, so it’s worth giving your saw a proper clean regularly.

Remove the side cover and bar, clean out the built-up debris, then check the important bits while you’re there:

• Chain brake band for dirt or damage
• Chain catcher for damage
• Clutch and drive sprocket for wear or damage
• Bar oil port is clear and able to do its job

A few minutes of maintenance can help your saw cut better, reduce unnecessary wear and help you spot problems before they become expensive ones.

Sometimes it’s definitely due. 😂
