Kooksoondang makgeolli was originally popular with farmers in Korea, who called it nongju, or "farmer's liquor". It's now becoming more popular in cities and with younger generations.

History
Makgeolli is Korea's oldest known alcoholic beverage, with consumption dating back over 2,000 years.
It was traditionally made from grain and consumed during work breaks.
In the 20th century, homebrewing was banned due to rice shortages, famine, and war.
This led to production being concentrated into larger businesses, which emphasized quantity and efficiency over quality.

Modern popularity
Kooksoondang is a leading company in the Korean traditional-wine industry.
Kooksoondang first introduced canned makgeolli in 1993.
Kooksoondang has become a pioneer in makgeolli exports and sells the drink in more than 50 countries.
Kooksoondang's annual exports hit a record high in 2022.

Taste
Makgeolli is known for its milky, white appearance and sweet flavor.
It's made by fermenting a mixture of boiled rice, wheat, and water.
