What started as a winemaking venture in Glengarry Road, Auckland has now developed into New Zealand's largest family-owned liquor retailer, with 18 stores throughout the country. A new arrival at Glengarry, and one we’re particularly excited about.

Ch*****ne Alexandre Bonnet, from Les Riceys in the southern reaches of Ch*****ne’s Côte des Bar. A remarkable little corner of the region, where Pinot Noir is Queen.

We’ve just welcomed a beautiful selection of Ch*****nes and still w**es from the estate, and there’s plenty worth exploring.

If you’re going to try just one, make it the Blanc de Noirs. A brilliant introduction to the house and the character of Pinot Noir from Les Riceys.

There’s a rather charming story about Les Riceys, the village in France that sits in Ch*****ne yet borders on Burgundy. The story is something like this: w**eries used to have two doors. One door would exit to Ch*****ne, whilst the other exited to Burgundy. Depending on who was buying (and what the taxes were), the vintner would deploy his goods from either the Champenois door or the Burgundian door.

Today Les Riceys is firmly rooted in Ch*****ne, and Alexandre Bonnet are producing some of the most delicious, resplendent and intriguing Ch*****nes we’ve come across (not to mention a still “rose”, in name only, that rivals the grand Burgundies of their neighbour)

The Glengarry Ch*****ne Walk Around returns 💫

For one afternoon, Victoria Park becomes a rather good place to be. We’ll be opening more than 50 w**es, with the great Ch*****ne houses alongside growers, méthode traditionnelle, new releases and old favourites //

There is a lot to taste, which is precisely the point. Come with a little curiosity and an afternoon to spare.

Malcolm Rees-Francis, Rockburn’s w**emaker, can be a bit of a cheeky fella.

Back in 2006, he pinched a few grapes destined for Rockburn’s Pinot Noir and made a wee rosé. Nineteen years later, Stolen Kiss has gone from an experiment to a firm favourite.

Strawberry, watermelon and a little touch of toffee. Fresh, bright and made for warmer days, whether that’s a long evening by the BBQ or something simple for dinner.

We’ll spare you the jokes about stealing kisses and stealing hearts. All we’ll say is we’re very glad Malcolm stole those grapes when he did.

🥂 What’s in a name?

For generations, Ch*****ne was all about the famous houses. But behind the bottles were the growers — the farmers who planted, pruned and harvested the grapes.

So how did their names finally make it onto the label?

Think exploding bottles, Ch*****ne riots, phylloxera and two very important letters: RM.

Today, Grower Ch*****ne gives us a chance to taste Ch*****ne through the people, villages and vineyards behind it.

Rockburn has been a Glengarry classic for as long as we can remember.

So it was very good to have w**emaker Malcolm Rees-Francis and GM Tim Severne through Vic Park for a catch up, bottles in hand of course.

Central Otago Pinot Noir has changed a lot over the years, but Rockburn has remained one of those names we’ve kept coming back to. A long standing favourite on our shelves, and always good to see the people behind the w**es.

And a big congratulations to Malcolm on his 20th vintage at Rockburn. Quite the milestone. 🍷

Swipe across. This ran in the Glengarry W**eletter in April 1994 more than thirty years ago and we’ve just dug it out of the archive.

On one side, a GASH cartoon: two growers squaring off over a single square metre of Burgundy dirt, one insisting he bought it fair and square last year. On the other, our Burgundy write-up, which made the same point without the shouting: in the Côte d’Or a single vineyard can be split between more than seventy individual growers, “which must stretch neighbourly tolerance to the limits.” Still one of the best lines we’ve ever printed.

And the mad thing is none of it has dated. The Côte d’Or is still a thin ribbon of hillside barely 40km long, carrying some of the most valuable dirt on the planet, carved into more than a thousand named parcels by centuries of inheritance. Growers still defend patches you could park a car on. The square-metre standoff is barely an exaggeration now, and it wasn’t in ’94 either.

We’ve been selling French w**e, and writing about it like this, for a very long time.

Found a box of original GASH works while digging through the archive, most from the ‘90s, most of them this good. The three pests of the French vineyard: grub, bird, and the tourist. I laughed out loud on my own in the office. So with there being a French sale on over the next fortnight, I’ll be pulling out the French ones to share, more to come ~ Aroha
