What can you do to celebrate Matariki? 💜

Every year there are many events that take place in throughout the country and Tāmaki honouring Matariki! There are many ways you can acknowledge the Māori New Year and observe the rising of Matariki at home.

⭐️Get up early in the morning and head outside to view Matariki before sunrise.

⭐️ Take time to remember loved ones who are no longer here. You might like to sit around a fire
sharing memories of these people.

⭐️ Give thanks for the year that has passed.

⭐️ Learn about the maramataka (Māori Calendar) and the phases of the moon.

⭐️ Have a feast - share food, recipes and love.

⭐️ Plan and create some goals for the year ahead.

⭐️ Plan and plant a garden.

⭐️ Spend time with family and friends

Celebrate in a way that feels right for you! ✨

Matariki is a time to remember those who have passed away, celebrate the present, and plan for the future. It is a time to come together, acknowledge the significance of the event, and embrace the spirit of Matariki in whatever way feels appropriate for you and your whānau 💜

Celebrating Matariki

The appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in mid-winter marks the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te Tau. Matariki is the star cluster that is known in other
cultures as Pleiades or M45.

The arrival of Matariki is a sign for people to gather to honour the dead, celebrate the present, and plan for the future, hence the phrase ‘Matariki hunga nui,’ meaning the many people of Matariki.

For our tūpuna, our Māori ancestors, astronomy was interwoven into all facets of life. Meticulous observations of the movements of the stars and planets, the changing position of the sun, the phases of the moon, and the appearance of anomalies such as comets and meteors were recorded and handed down from generation to generation as part of Māori oratory tradition.

This knowledge was connected to seasonal activities such as planting and harvesting, the flowering of plants, the spawning of fish, and the natural cycles of the environment. This astronomical knowledge sits at the heart of our many regional ecological calendar systems that guide Māori from season to season.

We normally wouldn’t post this on here but New Year, New Us. We will not tolerate anymore disrespect.

While we have been fortunate enough to reach 2025 with no robberies or hold-ups, we are no stranger to the odd petty theft.

As a dairy, we do not discriminate and treat everyone fairly. As we should be.

& As a whanau, we are big enough to protect each other. However, when our kaumatua are constantly being targeted by these teens who we know are not long-time locals - That is where you are in deep waters.

We acknowledge that a lot of the youth aren’t dealt a good hand and empathise from our observations being the local corner store. If it’s anything this dairy will give you; it’s grace.

Please do not mistake our kindness for weakness.

tldr; ALL CANDY ON SALE NOV 4TH, new products announcement.

From 4th November, ALL candy will be on sale! (excludes: chocolate blocks, chocolate bars, large confectionery packets, $1/$2 lolly bags and gum.)

Since our cigarette and v**e removal; we added single muesli bars, protein sachets and bars, school lunch additions and more.

To fuel our mission of serving the community BETTER, we believe we should offer snacks and treats that ≠ sugar-covered sugar.

Once these novelty candies sell out, it will make way for the newer products we have ready.

We’re not telling our customers what to eat or what to buy and we know how businesses profit off temptation and impulse.

We are simply offering alternatives to things like pies, chips, sherbert straws, gummy pizzas and cookies as snacks.

We hope you can be onboard and consider our efforts to make a more health-conscious, less-impulsive and overall happier and healthier next few generations.

With love for our community,

Levonia Store
