In Adriano Wu’s new Becoming Landscape series, the human figure is deliberately stripped of colour and reduced to an almost monochrome presence.
The figures appear quiet, restrained and strikingly alike, as if they were replicated social units. Around them, however, the world is intensely alive—saturated colours, spatial elements and vivid environments gradually take over the visual field.
The relationship between figure and landscape begins to shift.
The individual is no longer simply an observer of the landscape, but slowly becomes part of it.
As the external world grows brighter, richer and increasingly saturated with images, stimuli and desire, the individual may paradoxically begin to lose colour. We are shaped by the environments we inhabit, even as we gradually merge into them.
Yet Adriano Wu does not treat this condition as purely pessimistic.
Within the crowd, and in the unnoticed margins of everyday life, traces of individuality still remain: a pause, an emotion, a small gesture that cannot be entirely replicated.
Every fleeting moment of beauty eventually recedes into an unnoticed corner.
Beauty, and our encounters with it, are temporary. They appear, disappear, and eventually settle at the edges of attention and memory.
Perhaps it is precisely their transience that makes them meaningful.
The human figure becomes part of the landscape, while the landscape itself becomes a condition of human existence.
