NEW ENTRY & SO SAUMUR:
DOMAINE DE ROCHEVILLE
In the heart of the Saumur Champigny appellation, on the hill of Parnay, Domaine de Rocheville offers an exceptional panorama over the Loire Valley and the vineyards of Saumur.
The modern winery is built on a historic cellar carved in tuff.
Domaine de Rocheville was founded in 2004 by Philippe and Agnès Porché. They are assisted in the vineyard by Jerôme Callet. In 2011, they were awarded the Terra Vitis label, which stands for sustainable agriculture. Since 2019, the winery has also been certified organic. The vines are planted on calcareous clay and limestone with a subsoil of tuff. Tuff is able to store excess precipitation in winter and release it sparingly during periods of drought.
All but one of Domaine de Rocheville's parcels are on the Parnay plateau. The Chenin grapes for their top white wine ‘Clos de la Thibaudière’ come from a small plot in Brézé, one of the finest Saumur Blanc vineyards. The vines from which the red Saumur-Champigny is made are 45 years old.
Harvesting is done manually. Because yields are kept remarkably low, the wines show a good concentration. Fermentation takes place in wooden barrels. Furthermore, the wine matures in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, wooden casks or on sandstone eggs, depending on the type of wine.
Domaine de Rocheville's wines are fresh, lively and pure. They excel in fruit expression. Because of their concentration and acidity, they have good ageing potential.
