Akwa Ibom FA Hails NFF for Choosing Uyo to Host Rangers, Rivers Federation Cup Clash

____Commends Governor Umo Eno, Sports Commissioner Elder Paul Bassey for securing Godswill Akpabio International Stadium as match venue

The Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Football Association, Mr Samuel Umoh, has applauded the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for selecting Uyo as the host city for the high-profile President Federation Cup Round of 32 clash between Rangers International and Rivers United FC.

The blockbuster fixture is scheduled to take place on Monday, June 1, 2026, by 4pm at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Speaking on the development, Umoh described the fixture as one of the biggest domestic games in Nigerian football at the moment, especially after both clubs battled fiercely for the Nigeria Premier Football League title until the final day of the season.

Rangers International eventually emerged league champions after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in Lagos, edging Rivers United by just one point to clinch the title.

Both sides will now shift focus to the President Federation Cup as they continue their chase for silverware, with football lovers expected to troop into Uyo for the encounter.

Rangers International and Rivers United are familiar with the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, having used the facility as their venue for CAF club competitions.

Akwa Ibom State FA Chairman Mr Samuel Umoh thanked the NFF for approving Uyo as host city for the eagerly anticipated fixture.

“We are truly grateful to the Nigeria Football Federation for finding Uyo worthy to host this top-class President Federation Cup game involving the league champions Rangers International and runners-up Rivers United. This is a major football fixture and one that fans across the country are looking forward to. The decision by the NFF once again shows the confidence they have in Akwa Ibom State’s ability to host major football matches successfully.”

The Akwa Ibom FA Chairman also expressed appreciation to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for approving the use of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for the match.

According to him, although the NFF had initially designated the Uyo Township Stadium for the fixture, the intervention of the Akwa Ibom State Government through the Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, ensured that the game would now be played at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

“I want to specially thank His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, for approving the use of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for this prestigious game. While the NFF initially assigned the Uyo Township Stadium for the match, the Akwa Ibom State Government, through the efforts of the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, ensured that the game will now be played at the best football facility in the country.

“The Governor Umo Eno-led administration deserves great commendation for the excellent maintenance of sports facilities in the state. We must also appreciate Elder Paul Bassey, who received the news of the game coming to Uyo with great excitement and worked tirelessly to make sure the fixture is hosted at a world-class venue befitting both teams and the occasion.”

Umoh further called on football stakeholders, supporters and lovers of the game across Akwa Ibom State and beyond to come out in large numbers to witness what he described as a “massive football spectacle.”

“I want to call on all football stakeholders, supporters and fans to come out en masse and enjoy this massive encounter between the Nigerian league champions and the runners-up. This is a big match that promises excitement, quality football and a great atmosphere. Uyo is ready to welcome both teams and football fans from across the country.”

GOV UMO ENO’S INVESTMENT IN SPORTS YIELDING TANGIBLE GAINS
…….Athletes return from Ghana with medals, qualify for Glasgow.

The investment of the Akwa Ibom State Government in sports development under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno has continued to yield remarkable results, with athletes from the state recording impressive performances on the international stage barely three years into the administration.

This was disclosed on Monday, May 25, 2026, by the Honourable Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, during a reception in his office for Akwa Ibom athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Senior Athletics Championship held in Ghana from May 10 to 17, 2026, where they delivered medal-winning performances for the country.

Commending the athletes for making both Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria proud, the Commissioner attributed the success to Governor Umo Eno’s deliberate investment and commitment to grassroots sports development, describing the achievements as a reflection of the administration’s intentional efforts to position the state prominently on the global sports map.

According to him, “Akwa Ibom is proud of you. You did not just qualify to represent the country; you went there and won gold medals. Sports has always thrived in the state, but the renewed intentionality of His Excellency inspires us greatly. That is why he established a stand-alone Ministry of Sports to ensure focused attention on the sector. We sincerely appreciate his unwavering support.”

Elder Bassey further assured the athletes and coaches that despite preparations for next year’s elections, the state government would take time to honour their outstanding performances and continue projecting them to greater heights on the global stage.

Earlier, the Head Coach of the Athletics Association in the state, Coach Dan Umoette, expressed appreciation to the state government and the Ministry of Sports for the consistent support extended to athletes, noting that such encouragement continues to motivate the team toward excellence and podium finishes.
He added that three athletes from Akwa Ibom were part of the quartet that won gold in the 400 metres relay.

One of the athletes, Comfort James the country’s 800 metres record holder, appreciated the public support from the government and the Ministry of Sports, describing it as a morale booster that has strengthened the confidence of athletes to achieve even greater feats.

“We have not enjoyed opportunities like this before, where the entire government and Ministry of Sports openly support us. It has boosted our morale and helped us stand out. We hope to do even more in future competitions because we know we are not limited,” she said.

Among the Akwa Ibom athletes who featured for Nigeria were Esther Okon and Jacinta Lawrence, who won gold medals in the women’s 4x400m relay final, as well as Ezekiel Eno Asuquo and Victor Sampson, who clinched gold medals in the mixed 4x400m relay final. Also on the contingent were Comfort James, who featured in the women’s 800m race, and Clergy Edet, who competed in the women’s high jump event.

On hand to receive the team at the Ministry were the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Rosemary Ubia; Director of Sports, Mrs. Brigid Otton; Director of Organizing, Mrs. Margaret Ekpo; the Director of Coaching and Technical Unit,Mrs Kate Ekuta alongside other senior officials of the Ministry of Sports. Coaches present included Coach Kenti Christopher and Coach Janet Bassey.

From Champions to Relegation: The Sad Fall of Remo Stars

It is not common in football to see a club win the league title and then get relegated the following season. But in the Nigeria Premier Football League, surprises like this can happen because the competition is always difficult and unpredictable.

The NPFL remains one of the most competitive leagues in Africa, where the difference in quality between clubs is very small. Any team can defeat another on a good day, and success one season does not guarantee success the next season.

A clear example is Remo Stars, who have now suffered relegation to the Nigeria National League after playing a 1-1 draw against Bendel Insurance at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on the final day of the season.

The result completed a shocking fall for the Sky Blue Stars, who only last season celebrated their historic NPFL title victory. Their sudden drop from champions to relegated side shows just how tough and unforgiving the league can be.

One of the biggest problems for Remo Stars this season was the departure of important players from their title-winning squad. Players like Nduka Junior, Tochukwu Michael, Sodiq Ismail, Seun Ogunribide, and Sikiru Alimi all left the club, leaving huge gaps in the team.

The club struggled to replace these experienced players with quality additions. As the season progressed, the lack of depth in the squad became obvious, especially when injuries and poor form affected performances.

There was also uncertainty in the technical crew. Questions over the future of long-serving coach Daniel Ogunmodede created instability around the team. The arrival of Usman Abd’Allah as technical adviser did not go as planned too.

Another major setback was the club’s temporary relocation from Ikenne earlier in the season. Playing away from their usual home ground reduced the strong support they normally enjoyed from their fans.

Things became even more difficult after the club was suspended from hosting matches in Ikenne following the incident involving the damaged bus of Ikorodu City FC. Remo Stars were forced to play home matches in Ibadan and Benin, where they failed to get enough positive results.

All these problems combined to produce a disappointing campaign that ended in relegation.

Interestingly, this season’s champions, Rangers International, also struggled heavily last season before turning things around. That alone proves how unpredictable the NPFL can be.

In the Nigerian league, today’s champions can become tomorrow’s strugglers. That is what makes the NPFL both exciting and complex.
