🍶 RUMINO NO SAKE — るみ子の酒 🇯🇵

A sake with a label that immediately catches your attention — but there’s a great story behind it too.

Brewed by Moriki Shuzo in Iga, Mie Prefecture, this is Tokubetsu Junmai made with Kyokai No. 9 yeast, polished to 60%. The brewery describes it as clean yet firmly structured, designed to work comfortably with a wide range of food. It can be enjoyed chilled, at room temperature or warmed.

What makes the bottle even more interesting is the artwork. The Rumino no Sake series was named in 1992 by Akira Oze, creator of the famous sake manga Natsuko no Sake, who also illustrated the distinctive label.

“SCREW CAP = CHEAP W**E.”

MYTH ❌
A serious w**e should have a cork.
If it comes with a screw cap, it must be inexpensive or lower quality.

REALITY ✓
The closure tells you how the producer chose to seal the w**e — not how good the w**e is.

Many quality producers, particularly in Australia and New Zealand, deliberately use screw caps even for premium w**es.

Why would a w**emaker choose a screw cap?

🍷 Consistency
Every bottle receives a more predictable seal.

🦠 Much lower risk of cork taint
Natural cork can occasionally introduce TCA, producing the characteristic damp-cardboard or musty smell associated with a “corked” w**e.

🌿 Preserves freshness
Screw caps can be particularly useful for w**es where the producer wants to retain fresh fruit and aromatic character.

A classic expression of Amarone — rich, powerful, yet built around elegance and balance.

From the heart of Valpolicella Classica, Veneto, Tommasi produces its flagship Amarone using the traditional Appassimento method: carefully selected grapes are dried for around three months, concentrating their sugars, flavours and structure before fermentation. The w**e then matures for three years in large Slavonian oak casks.

“RED W**E GOES WITH MEAT. WHITE W**E GOES WITH FISH.”

MYTH ❌
Red w**e is for meat, and white w**e is for seafood.

REALITY ✓
Food pairing is much more about weight, texture, acidity, sweetness, fat and the sauce than simply whether the food is meat or fish.

🥩 Meat doesn’t always need red w**e

A light chicken dish can pair beautifully with Chardonnay, Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc.

Pork can work with both white and red w**e, depending on how it’s prepared.

🐟 Fish doesn’t always need white w**e

A rich, fatty fish such as salmon or tuna can work beautifully with a lighter red like Pinot Noir.

Grilled fish with mushrooms or an earthy sauce may also suit a light red.

🍽️ The sauce can change everything

Think about chicken:

Cream sauce → Chardonnay
