Yesterday's events remind us how quickly the sea can change—and why understanding coastal risks is so important:

Rip currents, especially near rock outcrops, are fast, forceful, and often invisible.

Tidal movement at Whitley Bay can drastically alter the beach in a short space of time.

Wave energy and high tides, influenced by swell direction, can quickly overwhelm even confident swimmers.

Please: always check local conditions, know where lifeguards are stationed, and never underestimate the power of the sea.

To the RNLI team and all supporting agencies: thank you. Your actions yesterday were nothing short of heroic.
