New 2021 Bandol Rouge from celebrated Provence estate now on the shelf plus, as ever, a tiny quantity of the new vintage rosé. Vineyards were first planted by the family in the 19th Century but extensively rejuvenated from the 1930s onwards following the marriage of Lucien Peyraud to Lucie ‘Lulu’ Tempier; the wines have been much acclaimed ever since. The label, something of an icon of Provençal winemaking, was designed by Lulu’s father Alphonse in 1951.

Newly arrived, a sprightly and distinctive blend of whole-bunch Listán Negro co-fermented with Listán Blanco (better known on the mainland as Palomino) from in Tenerife, known for its volcanic soils. Aromatic and expressive with delicate cherry and dark forest fruit, a touch of minerality and some fine earthy, slightly savoury tannin. Perfect gently chilled.

In the fridge today by the bottle, the superb single-vineyard ‘Marcharnudo Alto’ Fino from , among the oldest bodegas in Jerez. From one of the highest altitude sites in the region, this is the only Fino currently fermented in oak barrels, from a solera of an exceptional 10 criaderas rather than the more usual three.

With some long-awaited signs of spring, thoughts turning to Beaujolais Cru and a trio of the region’s most acclaimed producers: classic Brouilly from , Juliénas from rising star and new Saint-Amour from Jean-Paul Brun, one of the relentless promoters of this still under appreciated region and its serious potential for quality. Beautifully made wines all three.

Back in stock, superb value pair from in Terrasses du Larzac, only created an appellation in 2005 but fast garnering a reputation as the source of some of the Languedoc’s most distinctive, high quality new producers alongside established veterans like Domaine de Montcalmès. A lively Vermentino/Viognier blend plus a brooding, supple garrique-laden red of Mourvèdre, Carignan, Grenache and Syrah.
