1961 Château Branaire-Ducru.

A Fourth Growth from Saint-Julien, from one of the great Bordeaux vintages of the 20th century.

1961 was tiny in quantity, but exceptional in quality, producing powerful, concentrated w**es that have gone on to live for decades.

More than 60 years later, this was still very much alive.

Old Bordeaux isn’t always about perfection. Sometimes the fascination is simply seeing what has survived, how it has evolved and what remains in the glass after six decades.

Krug acquired Clos du Mesnil in 1971, originally with the intention of using its Chardonnay in Krug Grande Cuvée.

Then came 1979.

The fruit from this tiny walled vineyard was so impressive that Krug decided to bottle it on its own for the first time.

Clos du Mesnil was born.

The vineyard itself covers just 1.84 hectares in the middle of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, its walls dating back to 1698. One vineyard, 100% Chardonnay and only made when Krug believes the year warrants it.

2002 was just the 16th release.

13,278 bottles were produced.

And only 500 magnums.

A very special arrival at Seckford.

1995 was a very good Bordeaux vintage. After a wet start to the year, conditions turned warm and dry, with temperatures reaching 37°C. Mouton harvested from 12–27 September, producing a w**e made from 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

And then there’s that label.

It was created by Catalan artist Antoni Tàpies.

Tàpies was no conventional painter. He became famous for mixing paint with things like sand, plaster, fabric, rope and wire, creating rough, almost damaged-looking works. He had originally studied law before abandoning it to pursue art, eventually becoming one of Spain’s most internationally recognised artists.

For Mouton he went deliberately simple: a nose, two hearts, a mouth and an eye, representing the senses and pleasure involved in drinking great w**e.

So yes, it might look like a five-year-old drew it.

But stick that drawing onto a magnum of 1995 Mouton Rothschild and suddenly it becomes rather more interesting.

A 1979 Château Mouton Rothschild Jeroboam.

For this vintage, Mouton commissioned Japanese artist Hisao Domoto to create the artwork, the first Japanese artist ever to design a Mouton Rothschild label. 

The label itself even records the scale of the vintage: 292,540 bottles and half-bottles, alongside just 4,510 magnums and jeroboams.

This is one of my favourite w**e stories.

Kenjiro Kagami was an engineer working for Hitachi in Japan when he decided to completely change direction.

In 2001 he left Japan for France. First, he had to learn French. He then enrolled at the Lycée Viticole de Beaune and began learning his craft at some extraordinary addresses, including Comte Georges de Vogüé in Burgundy, Thierry Allemand in Cornas and Bruno Schueller in Alsace.

In 2010 he moved to the Jura to work with Jean-François Ganevat.

Ganevat later helped Kagami acquire a small vineyard near the village of Grusse and, alongside his wife Mayumi, he produced the first vintage of Domaine des Miroirs in 2011.

Today they farm around four hectares and produce only around 10,000 bottles a year. The w**es have developed a cult following and are incredibly difficult to find.

Even the name tells part of the story.

“Kagami” means “mirror” in Japanese. “Miroirs” means “mirrors” in French. The name also reflects Kagami’s belief that w**e should be a reflection of its land, vintage and the people behind it.

1994 Château Cheval Blanc.

One of the great names of Saint-Émilion, from an estate that has spent generations doing things its own way.

Cheval Blanc is unusual for the Right Bank because Cabernet Franc plays such a major role alongside Merlot, giving the w**e a completely different identity to many of its neighbours.

Now more than 30 years old, this is mature Bordeaux from one of the most famous estates in the world.

A serious piece of w**e history.

A six-litre imperial of 1988 Château Léoville Las Cases. The equivalent of eight standard bottles.

There’s a reason three famous Bordeaux w**es carry the Léoville name. They were once part of the same vast estate in Saint-Julien.

Divided between 1826 and 1840, it became Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Léoville Las Cases. Las Cases retained three-fifths of the original property, including its historic vineyard heart. Its walled vineyard stretches towards neighbouring Château Latour.

Classified as a Second Growth in 1855, Las Cases has earned a reputation for challenging Bordeaux’s highest-ranked estates.

And the vintage? Often overshadowed by 1989 and 1990, 1988 produced structured, long-lived reds. Later tastings of Las Cases reveal blackcurrant, cedar and to***co, with the firmness of youth giving way to mature complexity.

Who doesn’t love a big bottle? An imperial like this deserves a table full of people and an evening with absolutely no rush.
