Blind tasting a wine (not knowing anything about where it's from) is a great way to evaluate wines independent of any preconceptions - which is how MW Jane Masters came across her Wine of the Week - Levantine, by Chateau Musar in Lebanon.
“Chateau Musar is a distinctive winery, with its vineyards lying in the high-altitude Bekaa Valley, where vines have thrived for over 6,000 years. In 1930, at just 20 years old, Gaston Hochar founded Chateau Musar, inspired by Lebanon’s extensive winemaking history and his travels in Bordeaux. In 1956, his son, Serge Hochar, became involved in the winemaking and it was Serge who brought the winery international recognition, when he famously continued to make wine despite of the Civil War of 1972 - even when the winery and vineyards were caught in the crossfire.
"Levantine has an appealing spicy bouquet, long-lasting red fruit flavours, and elegant texture, reminiscent of a good Rhône. Offering a true taste of Lebanon, this wine's crafted with minimal intervention, using wild yeast fermentation and certified organic practices, so that each vintage reflects Lebanon’s unique climate and terroir.”
