Drink of the Day 217 – Ardnamurchan Midgie 2025 (70cl @ 48% abv)

Available in store for £52.99

A Bit Of Background – For those of you who don’t know, the highland Midge (Culicoides impunctatus) is a tiny, flying, biting insect that thrives in still, humid conditions. Aside from the Loch Ness Monster, this wee beastie is the most feared species in Scotland, terrorising locals and tourists alike from early spring until early autumn. To celebrate this distinctive Scottish insect, Ardnamurchan Distillery in the Western Highlands have produced a second batch of The Midgie following last year’s collaboration with Smidge. This year’s release sees a split of 50% ex-bourbon barrels, 48% port barriques and 2% sherry casks, with 75% of the spirit being unpeated and 25% being peated. The resulting whisky features delicate smokiness with perfectly balanced sweetness and salinity with (if you pardon the pun) an excellent bite.

Nose – seabreeze, salted caramel, charred pineapple, strong mints

Palate - super oily and rounded mouthfeel, pink peppercorns, toasted almonds, coconut shavings, gentle smoke, long dry finish

Final Thoughts – worried about the midgies? Check out , a site by Smidge that tracks the daily midgie levels throughout Scotland. Or… embrace the midgies by lathering up in a layer of smidge midgie repellent and pour yourself a dram of The Midgie!

Drink of the Day 216 – Overtone Sunspill Strawberry and Mango Gose (440ml@ 5% abv)

Available instore for £4.50

A Bit Of Background – Overtone Brewing was founded in the Summer of 2018 by three beer enthusiasts hailing from China, America and Scotland. Based out of Glasgow, Overtone have been one of the most exciting new craft breweries to come out of the city, contributing to a varied and constantly expanding Scottish craft beer scene. Known for the abstract patterns on their cans, Overtone are inspired by their founders’ love for electronic music, taking inspiration from dynamic patterns used in the electronic scene – not too unlike the visuals you might see projected throughout the nightclubs that Glasgow is so famous for. Today’s drink of the day is Overtone’s version of a Gose – a brew that has its origin as a traditional German beer that was first brewed in the town of Goslar, Lower Saxony. Gose became such a popular style of beer in Leipzig that it is considered as the flagship beer of the city. Sunspill features classic ingredients found in gose beers, coriander and salt (locally sourced from ) which tones down the sweetness and brings a complexity to the Scottish strawberry and alphonso mango puree also featured in the beer. A great summer sipper that we highly recommend!
Nose – macerated strawberries, hibiscus flower, candyfloss, sea breeze, lemon zest

Palate - Strawberry ice cream, hints of pink grapefruit, blood orange, hop bitterness, fresh strawberries + raspberries, into a touch of pine, coriander and mild salinity on the finish making this quite morish!
Final Thoughts – a punchy sour beer filled with fresh fruit, the salt and coriander help to tone down the sweetness to create a perfectly balanced brew to enjoy during the sunshine.

Drink of the Day 214 – Gran Sasso Montepulciano D’ Abruzzo DOC (75cl @ 13.5% abv)
Available in store and online for £12.99
https://www.luvians.com/shop/wine/gran-sasso-montepulciano-dabruzzo/
A Bit of Background – The wine we are sampling today has a real following with some of our regular customers and it is easy to see why. Made by Fantini, the Gran Sasso offers rich fruit, a full body and elegance at a phenomenal price.

Fantini is an innovative winery employing 21 winemakers and working long term with a large variety of small and family run vineyards. This model allows them to create huge selection of expertly crafted wines that are still made with a boutique approach.
Montepulciano is the second most widely planted grape in Italy and is popular for producing wine bursting with juicy red fruit balance with good acidity and decent tannins. The best examples come from the Montepulciano D’ Abruzzo DOC, as our wine today does, where we find richer, darker fruited wines with more depth often developed with oak aging.

Nose – Cherry, violet, leather, air cured salami
Palate – Medium full, dark plum, wild blueberries and blackberries, a touch of forest floor and balsamic. Acidity and silky tannins are softened by a little oak creating a multilayered wine that balances freshness and complexity.
Final Thoughts – This is a banger of a wine and a super versatile crowd pleaser that is equally at home for relaxed drinks or with grilled meats and game. Find out for yourself (if you are braving the Lammas Fair crowds) as we are pouring samples now.

Drink of the Day 215 - Jungle Bird Cocktail – made with Gosling’s Black Seal Bermuda Rum
available online and instore for £29.99
https://www.luvians.com/shop/spirits/rum/goslings-black-seal-bermuda-rum/

A Bit of Background – invented at the Hilton hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Jungle Bird sits firmly in the category of modern classic cocktails and is a real cocktail-maker’s cocktail (if you want to impress your local bartender, order yourself this drink!). Hailing from the 1970s, this Tiki-Style cocktail went from being a welcome drink at the Hilton to a mainstay in bars across the world, helping to kick start a second wave in the tiki drink craze. The hotel bar at the KL Hilton was named the Aviary, and the hotel featured a collection of exotic birds which could be viewed from the bar – making the name particularly fitting for the hotel. Made using Campari, Dark rum, pineapple juice, fresh squeezed lime and sugar syrup, this tiki-style sipper is not to be missed. Today we have used Gosling’s Black Seal rum for our Jungle Bird, as it is a brilliant rum for mixing, most famously making the dark ‘storm cloud’ float in a Dark ‘n’ Stormy cocktail. Whilst most drinkers think that Goslings Black Seal belongs solely with the Dark ‘n’ Stormy, we’ve decided to make this rum our Jungle Bird base to show off its versatility as a mixing rum, in the hope that this product gets the love it deserves!
Nose – sweet pineapple meets bitter Campari for a juicy, tangy and refreshing scent
Palate – tropical acidity, great depth of flavour – a great cocktail to allow dark rum to sing! Perfectly balances with the Campari predominant on the finish.
Final Thoughts – combine 45ml of dark or blackstrap rum (we’ve used Gosling’s Black Seal Rum) with 15ml of Campari (or your favourite Italian red bitter liqueur), 45ml of pineapple juice, 15ml of freshly squeezed lime juice and 12.5ml of sugar syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake vigorously before straining into a highball glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.

Drink of the Day 213 – Caorunn Gin (70cl @ 41.8% abv)
Available in store for £28.99
A Bit of Background – Today is the first day of the annual Lammas Market in St Andrews – Europe’s longest continuous street festival, with historical records suggesting that the fair has its origins in the 13th century. Lammas Day (traditionally August 1st) was an important day for Anglo-Saxons and Celts, predating the Christian tradition of harvest festivals. The name ‘Lammas’ comes from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hlafmaesse’ meaning ‘loaf mass,’ and this pagan festival became a great excuse for local fairs across the county. The modern fair’s roots are based in this harvest celebration market, where crops and goods were sold to people from all around the East Neuk of Fife. As you can imagine, wherever large groups of people gather, there is bound to be food, drink and entertainment. Today’s stalls are more entertainment-driven than the medieval origins – rides like dodgems, Helter Skelters, and rollercoasters can be found on Market Street and South Street, or you can check out the funhouse-style attraction the Crazy Cottage, which is right outside our store on 66 Market Street. To celebrate the first day of this historic street festival we are going back to its pagan origins, and we are drinking a Caorunn (pronounced Ka-Roon) and tonic. Founded in 2009, Caorunn is named after the Gaelic phrase for Rowan berry – one of the five handpicked Celtic botanicals that meet six classic gin botanicals to make this easy-drinking, aromatic-forward gin. The Rowan tree held significance to the pagans as it was seen as an important symbol of protection against witches and sorcery.
Nose – Jasmine, eucalyptus and lime peel. Notes of juniper emerge as the gin opens.
Palate – Lemon oil, citrus fruits and sweetness of heather honey
Final Thoughts – a great gin to enjoy neat or enjoyed as part of your gin and tonic. Keeping with the pagan roots of the Lammas festival, we recommend Elderflower tonic – featuring elderflower, another important symbolic plant to pagan culture.

212) Drink of the Day 212 – Allegrini Valpolicella (75cl @ 12.5% abv)
£16.99
Available in store for £16.99

A Bit Of Background – Valpolicella is a renowned wine region in Northern Italy that produce wines that are light to medium bodied, fruity and approachable. The grapes used to make this wine are typically local grape varietals such as Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and Molinara. This wine in particular is a blend of 70% Corvina Veronese and 30% Rondinella. The grapes are harvested around mid-September and undergo a soft pressing. Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for 9 days with frequent pumping over. The wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks until February then left to rest for 2 months in the bottle.

Nose - Fife strawberries, red cherries, rose petals, blackcurrants.

Palate - This fresh and elegant wine has excellent acidity, with notes of red summer fruits.

Final Thoughts – This is the perfect summertime red wine to drink in the garden on a warm day. It can be enjoyed on its own or pairs well with grilled meats (both red and white), pasta dishes and Italian starters.

Swing by Luvians this evening for a free sample of Allegrini Valpolicella for today's Thirsty Thursday Sample!

Drink of the Day 211 – 7 Years of Vault City, STUFFD Cosmic Space Dust (440ml @ 6.2% abv)
Available in the St Andrews Store for £7.77 (see what we did there!)
A Bit of Background – For those who may not yet be aware, we like Vault City Brewing quite a lot around here. Therefore, we are more than pleased to join them in celebrating their 7th Anniversary with some characteristically BIG beers. The Edinburgh based brewery is known for their exploratory (and intriguingly over-the-top) forays into complex, rich sour beers as well as luxurious dessert stouts and barleywines. Fittingly, their 7th Anniversary series serves to underscore their range and call-back to many of their most beloved brews of the past seven years.
Today, we chose to try STUFFD Cosmic Space Dust – a luxurious smoothie sour packed with various fruit and freeze-dried ice cream (essentially, the ‘astronaut’ ice cream you might remember having tried as a kid whilst visiting your local science center). Vault City’s shooting for the stars with these beers and undoubtedly succeeding.
Nose – A cornucopia of berries – blueberries, raspberries, strawberries with a pleasing fermented note and ripe depth.
Palate – Sweet fruit smoothie, complete with pressed berries; mashed banana; and morello cherry sweetness, held together with a slight overripe funkiness. Finishes with a welcome tinge of acidity smoothed over with vanilla and strawberry jam.
Final Thoughts – It’s out of this world! (Sorry!) But seriously, a refreshingly fruity, rich sour smoothie that goes down far too easily. We are looking forward to future Vault City anniversaries!

Drink of the Day 198 – Oliver Zeter Pinot Noir Reserve 2022 (75cl @ 13%)

Available in store for £29.99

A Bit Of Background – Continuing on with our 31 Days of German Wines, today we’re trying another Pinot Noir. This time, it’s Oliver Zeter’s Pinot Noir Reserve – same grape, but stylistically a very different wine from the bright and vibrant Walt we tried a few days back. This wine is all about precision and attention to detail. The grapes are harvested from two key vineyards: the first is old vines planted in clay-limestone and stony slate soils in the Münzberg area of Godramstein, while the second consists of grapes from Burgundy clones grown in the Im Sonnenschein site in Siebeldingen. The grapes are partially destemmed, then crushed and fermented in small wooden cuves. The wine then ages for 14 months in 500-liter tonneaux and 228-liter pièce barrels sourced from the forests of the Palatinate, Vosges, and Allier, a maximum of 25% of which will be new oak. The wine is then aged for another 12 months minimum in bottles before released.

Nose – Forest floor, rich with mushrooms hidden under decomposing oak leaves, some pencil shavings and fresh brambles. As the wine opens up, spicy oak aromas come to the fore.

Palate – More forest fruits with a good tannic structure and elegant oak.

Final Thoughts – A refined yet animalistic wine – we like to think that this is what the grumpy bear on the bottle (legend has it, it represents Herr Zeter himself) would be drinking!

Drink of the Day 195 – Daftmill 2012 Summer Batch Release (70cl @ 46% abv)
£105

Available in store and online, while stocks last at https://www.luvians.com/shop/whisky/daftmill-2012-summer-release/ - you can also buy a dram from our good friends at The Keys Bar, St Andrews.

A Bit of Background – Like a slumbering testudinidae emerging from its winter hibernation, local legend, Francis Cuthbert of Daftmill is back with another semi-annual release of his single farm, single malt. As always, the provenance is impeccable, with every drop coming from Concerto barley grown in the South Fields of his farm in the summer of 2011 prior to harvesting on the 2nd & 3rd of September. After being dried and stored on the farm it was sent to Alloa for malting in the spring of 2012 before being distilled in & filled into 23 first fill bourbon barrels in the July & August of 2012, then bottled in June of 2025.

Nose – Notes of caramel and vanilla intermingle with barley sugar, herbaceous notes and zesty lemon.

Palate – It opens with light notes of leafy mint, citrus twist butterscotch sauce. Pineapple upside-down cake, vanilla rich crème brûlée and poached apricots follow. The finish is rich and creamy with more sweet citrus and gentle baking spices.

Final Thoughts – Much like a distiller and his shooglebox, this dram can’t help but bring a smile to anyone’s face. The best Summer Batch release we’ve tried so far (and we’ve tried them all) it brings a fresh, zesty brightness to what is emerging as the classic tropical fruit, sweet malt & soft spice balance of great Daftmill. Grab your bottle while you can, it’s Dafmill Day!

Drink of the Day 190– Doom Witch 2025 (375ml @ 6.2% abv)

£7.00

A Bit Of Background – for today’s Drink of the Day we’re popping across the River Tay to explore Holy Goat’s Doom Witch, a blended sour red ale made using Scottish strawberries. Heavily inspired by Flanders Red (also known as Flemish Red) style of ales, Doom Witch is a blend of 80% ‘young’ stock beer aged in steel with 20% ‘mature’ stock beer that has been aged for up to one year in red wine barrels. The strawberries used are grown locally and used in fermentation as soon as possible to harvest to help retain as much of the sweet flavours of Scottish strawberries. The result is a complex sweet-and-sour ale with subtle oakiness from the barrel aging.

Nose – sweet malt, strawberry jam, honeyed red fruits, stewed berries

Palate - very creamy texture, strawberry tarts, slight biscuity finish, tannic spice and delicate oak aftertaste

Final Thoughts – a very tasty offering from our Dundonian neighbours – you can tell from just a few sips that the brewery are committed to paying homage to traditional beermaking of the past – Doom Witch is a perfect combination of more classic beermaking styles with a refreshing modern twist. Hail the Goat!

A Bit Of Background – showing the classically elegant florality of the Bruichladdich style, the Classic Laddie is distilled using 100% Scottish barley. As a barley-forward spirit, the unpeated Classic Laddie is clean, fresh and lively celebration of organically farmed barley from the Scottish mainland and the island of Islay itself.

Nose – Barley sugar, freshly picked wildflowers, toasted sourdough bread with salted butter, candied lemon peel and crumbly Scottish tablet

Palate - sticky light brown sugar, apple and honey tart – fruit forward with a hint of wildflower and sweet malt towards the finish. Add a dash of water to bring out hints of warming spice
