Drink of the Day 154 – Schöfferhofer Lemon Radler (500cl @ 2.5% abv)

Available in store for £2.20

A Bit of Background – Today is World Bicycle Day, a day established by the UN to recognise and celebrate the longevity of the bicycle as an affordable and environmentally sustainable means of transportation. To celebrate, we are cracking open the beer most associated with the humble bicycle: the Radler. The Radler was invented completely by accident in the early 1920s by Franz Kulger, a Bavarian tavern owner. At the time, cross-country cycling was very popular throughout Europe, where groups in the thousands would cycle across the German countryside. Kulger was notified that a group of approx. 13,000 cyclists were fast approaching his tavern, but he knew he wouldn’t have enough beer to satisfy the group. Kulger added a sparkling lemonade (which he was struggling to sell to punters) to his stock of beer, creating what was coined “Radlermass” or “Cyclist’s Litre,” which was ultimately shortened to its current moniker: Radler. One of the many great things about Radlers (as well as tasting amazing) is their relatively low alcohol contents. This was particularly popular amongst participants of the cycling craze at the time, as patrons could drink enough beers to feel refreshed and satisfied, without getting too drunk to carry on their trip.

At Luvians, we stay consistently stocked with a modest selection of Radlers, and Schöfferhofer’s our go-to brewery. Today, we’re trying their brand-new, seasonal Lemon Radler, and it does not disappoint!

Nose – Sour lemon gummy, fresh lime zest, and hints of sage

Palate – Cloudy lemonade leaning into a lemon meringue pie, topped with sour gummy bears. Highly drinkable.

Final Thoughts – Chill, refreshing, tasty, and moreish. Does what it says on the can and then some! Just tart enough for sour beer drinkers, yet still perfectly casual for a summer picnic.

Drink of the Day 153 – Port Charlotte SYC:01 (2013) (70cl @ 54.4% abv)
Available in store for £110.00
A Bit of Background – those who have been in the shop today will have noticed our barrel at the till has changed over to our new Port Charlotte Display – where we will be giving away free merch with very bottle purchased (whilst stocks last). Whilst we love both the 10 and the 18-year-old age statements here at Luvians, we wanted to spotlight one of the more unusual bottles on our Bruichladdich bench: the Port Charlotte SYC:01 (2013). Matured in Syrah casks, which is a first for their cask exploration series, the influence of the wine cask works alongside the peat smoke of the single malt to give notes of berries and a hint of warming citrus. The winery where these casks have been sourced from share the distillery’s passion for terroir and specialise in organic/ biodynamic wines, where climate and soil are at the forefront of everything they make. As a bold and full-bodied wine, the ex-Syrah cask finish imparts layers of spice and rich red fruit notes to Port Charlotte’s signature aromatic smoke for a robust but smooth flavour profile. Before being finished in the ex-Syrah casks, the whisky was initially filled in first-fill (75%) and second fill (25%) bourbon barrels in 2013, before being recasked into the first-fill Syrah between 2018 and 2023, when it was bottled. With a Phenol level of 40 PPM, the peat is at the same level as the core 10-year-old release but bottled at a slightly higher ABV (54.4% compared to 50%), meaning water can be added to customise the dram to your preferred serving strength.
Nose – grilled plums, toasted hazelnuts, salted caramel, touch of sage
Palate - stewed redcurrants, rye bread smothered with strawberry jam, dusting of cocoa powder, BBQ-charred peaches. Long and flavourful finish, with a hint of salinity.
Final Thoughts – Please enjoy our top-notch modelling of all the freebies we have on offer (whilst stocks last).

Drink of the Day 151 – Ardbeg Dolce (70cl @ 47.8% abv)
Available in store for £85
A Bit of Background – This year’s Ardbeg day release is a celebration of the shared island life of Islay and Sicily, two islands which prioritise and cherish community spirit. The release’s theme is ‘La Dolce Vita’ (the sweet life) inspired by 1960’s Italian cinema – think silk headscarves, Vespa motorbikes, outdoor dining and rustic town squares. Ardbeg Dolce combines the Mediterranean charm of Sicily with a distinctive Ardbeg twist. Combine the dry, sweet Sicilian heat with the classic, intensely smoky character of Ardbeg and you have all the elegance and charm of the Mediterranean, married with the rugged, windswept spirit of the Inner Hebrides.
Matured in both ex-Bourbon American Oak and Sicilian Marsala Wine casks, the resulting dram is rich and complex with both sweet and savoury notes… think an Islay pantry being combined with a Sicilian garden for a deliciously morish tipple.
Nose – sweet and soft peat, caramelized sugar, apricots drizzled in wildflower honey, charred peaches, roasted chanterelle mushrooms, black olive tapenade and a hint of pine needles
Palate - an up-front spice leads the palate with cinnamon, nutmeg and salted Swedish liquorice. As the flavour develops there are notes of apples stewed in maple syrup, sticky dates, dark chocolate-covered honeycomb, with flamed lemon rind and currants on the mid-palate. Long finish with woody-tobacco notes – reminiscent of a sheet of cedar wood in a fresh box of Cuban ci**rs.
Final Thoughts – a deliciously complex dram which can be enjoyed on the sun-soaked streets of Sicily or the (slightly colder) sun-soaked streets of St Andrews.

Drink of the Day 150 – Waldschütz Fels am Wagram Grüner Veltliner
(75cl @ 13.5% abv)
Available in store for £22.99
A Bit of Background – today’s choice for Saturday Sample is the last of our month’s focus on Austrian wines, in collaboration with . To celebrate the wines of Austria we wanted to spotlight a wine made entirely of a grape which is arguably the most important white wine grape in the country: Grüner Veltliner. Although Grüner Veltliner (GV) is planted elsewhere in central Europe in places like Hungary, Slovakia and Czechia, it is in Austria where GV is most known for producing very fine, full-bodied wines. According to Jancis Robinson, one vine in every three planted in Austria is GV, and in the Niederösterreich region of the country this proportion climbs to one in every two.
The Wagram region, which was known as the Donauland until 2007, is situated just northwest of Vienna and benefits from the moderating effects of the Danube River (which splits the region in two) and northernly winds. What makes Wagram a unique region is the abundance of Loess soil - sedimentary rocks made from dust deposited by glaciers, winds and water. what makes Loess soil so magical is its ability to retain water in times of drought, whilst also working as effective drainage during periods of heavy rain.
Nose – A very green nose: asparagus, green bell pepper, minerality, wet stones, white pepper, pink Himalayan salt, not heavily citrus forward except for waxy lemon peel
Palate - The green shines through whereas the salinity entirely disappears. Minerality remains quite prevalent. Long, well-structured finish with medium-low acidity.
Final Thoughts – Not a very fruit forward wine; what’s interesting here is how green and savoury a wine this is. Probably best paired with food: white fish and citrusy sauces will beautifully balance this wine.

Drink of the Day 149 – Foursquare Mandamus (70cl @ 57% abv)
Available in store and online, £99.00 https://www.luvians.com/shop/spirits/rum/foursquare-mandamus-single-blended-rum/
A Bit of Background – Last night we were delighted to play host to Peter Holland, UK Brand Ambassador for what is, for our money, the best distillery in the Caribbean, Foursquare of Barbados. Along with 18 fellow rumventurers we took a deep dive into the incredible range of rums produced by Richard Seale at his distillery on the southeast corner of that stunning island. The Exceptional Cask Series has been the pinnacle of Foursquare’s releases for the last couple of decades, but it now in the home straight, with Mandamus (Latin for “we command”) representing the 29th release in the range. A mix of pot and column still produced whiskies (often called heavy & light rums) are uniquely blended prior to aging for 16 years in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-port casks. It was a delight to explore this and 6 other rums with a man so rum soaked that he might as well be a human rum-baba!
Nose – candied orange, nutmeg, cinnamon, juicy plums
Palate - initial hit of winter spices on the front of the palate, which develop into notes of hazelnuts dipped in caramel, dark chocolate with sea salt, and a hint of jammy fruits on the finish.
Final Thoughts – We think the weather has been inspired by Peter’s presence this week, bringing the Caribbean to the East Neuk! It was absolute pleasure to explore the Foursquare & Doorly’s range, and to try some of the final releases from the Exceptional Cask Series (due to end in July with Epilogue). The port cask juiciness of Mandamus is one of the best we have encountered in the series. Seek out a bottle while you still can, we command it!

Drink of the Day 148 – Bogle Chardonnay (750ml @ 14% abv)
Available in store and online for £20.99 https://www.luvians.com/shop/wine/bogle-chardonnay/
A Bit of Background – today’s Drink of The Day comes from the Bogle Family Vineyards, A California-based winery who have been farming in the region for 6 generations, and winemaking for 3 generations. In 1968, the first 20 acres of wine grapes were planted and for the following 10 years the Bogle family sold their grapes to other wineries before releasing wine under their own label in 1978. The original winery, which was built in 19789, still stands today. In 1989, the 5th generation took over the winery project, proudly growing the farming operation to 1,000 acres of wine grapes planted by 1997. In the late 1990s, siblings Warren and Jody returned to the family business, whilst their brother Ryen returned to the business in 2007. Over the past almost twenty years the three siblings continue to work in the day-to-day operations of the winery, ensuring that the dedication and passion of the previous generations is upheld. As a family-run business ourselves, we wanted to highlight the successes of another family-run business, and what better way to do that than trying their 2023 Chardonnay on a gorgeously sunny day like today?
Nose – Melon, honeydew, citrus, green apple, some baking spice, cinnamon
Palate - Lightly oaked, mostly vanilla, stone fruits, again green apple and pear, cream. Creamy, very round texture that coats the mouth, medium acidity, medium body
Final Thoughts – Today’s tasting notes come from Avery, our newest member of staff. A great option for an American chardonnay that’s not overwhelmingly oaky and heavy, veering more on the fruity side while retaining good structure. Really solid choice for a sunny day and a great pairing for seafood and summer salads.

Drink of the Day 147 – A Little Faith Hazy Session IPA (330ml @ 4% abv)
Available in store for £3.30
A Bit of Background – today’s choice for Drink of The Day comes from the Northern Monk brewery, based in Leeds. The story of Northern Monk begins in 2013, at a time when the British beer scene was divided into two categories, the first being the classic British brews, and the second being more American-style craft beer craze which was gaining massive traction at the time. The founders of Northern Monk, Brian and Russell, met at the Leeds International Beer Festival, where they discussed their shared Scottish heritage, their Northern upbringing, and most importantly, their love of beer. Russell’s Gran had sold her house around the time of the fortuitous meeting at the beer festival, sharing the proceeds from the house sale by giving each grandchild £5,000. With this start-up money, Russell and Brian started brewing in a damp little cellar, beginning the journey that has now become Northern Monk.
A Little Faith is the sessionable younger sibling of the brand’s trailblazing Hazy pale ale: Faith. Faith was first launched in 2015 and was one of the first New England IPA style beers to launch in the UK. A Little Faith takes all the same flavours of the Faith that you know and love, but in a lower-ABV format, without compromising on taste.
Nose – Light citrus, ripe pineapple, and tangerine peel
Palate – Spritzy citrus, lemon zest, and light hoppiness
Final Thoughts – craft brewed with proper Northern pride, this hazy session IPA is bursting with juicy tropical flavours, perfect for sitting in the sun and enjoying the current heatwave in the UK.

Drink of the Day 146 – Glengoyne 21y/o (70cl @ 43% abv)
Available in store for £215.00

A Bit of Background – For today’s drink of the day we are featuring a very special dram…To celebrate the birthdays of Luvianistas, Ava and Lindsey, it would only be fitting to crack open a 21 y/o Glengoyne (especially as Ava has recently celebrated her 21st birthday!) What is now known as Glengoyne Distillery, was founded by George Connell who began distilling in secret at Burnfoot Farm in 1820. Connell eventually acquired a license to distil under the name of Glenguin of Burnfoot in 1833. Located in Dumgoyne, Glengoyne Distillery is the most southern Highland distillery. Glengoyne is known for having the slowest distillation time in Scotland, hence the phrase “Unhurried since 1833” which you will find on the bottle. The Glengoyne 21 y/o is aged in 100% sherry casks, giving this single malt as deep amber colour.

Nose – cinnamon, brioche, golden raisins, orange zest, and baked apples

Palate – very creamy palate, reminiscent of tarte tatin, a luxurious confectionary drinking experience

Final Thoughts – Stop by Luvians to check out the Glengoyne 21y/o, a perfect single malt, not just for 21st birthdays, but for any celebratory occasion!

Drink of the Day 145 – Pilot IPApricot (330ml @ 5.4% abv)
Available in store for £3.00

A Bit of Background – Today we are trying the IPApricot from Pilot Beers. The Leith-based brewery was founded in 2011 by Matt Johnson and Patrick Jones, two alums of the Heriot-Watt’s Brewing and Distilling Master’s degree and have been producing top quality beers ever since. Sustainability is at the core of Pilot’s operation: in 2014 Pilot were the first brewery in Scotland to stop using isinglass to clarify their beers. Not only has the use of isinglass resulted in many sturgeon species being on the edge of extinction, but its common use in beer production makes it difficult for those following a vegan diet to know which beers are safe for them to drink. Isinglass also strips flavour and aroma when it is used – so Pilot instead adopt a slow clarification method, ensuring each beer they produce tastes amazing, without rushing the process.

2p of every can of Pilot beer goes towards Drinklusion, a fundraising initiative that promotes inclusivity across a variety of charity/ social inclusivity groups. Currently the Drinklusion programme is supporting Bikes for Refugees, the grassroots charity Stay Up Late, the Leith Theatre Trust, and EHFM, an online community radio station.

IPApricot is the third release in Pilot’s recent series of fruited IPAs. Made with Mosaic and Citra hops, and apricot (obviously), this fruity IPA packs a hoppy and delicious apricot-y punch!

Nose – Dried mango, lemon peel, and apricot puree

Palate – Low bitterness, hints of tropical fruits including mango and passionfruit, and ripe apricot

Final Thoughts – Stop by Luvians to grab yourself a can of IPApricot to enjoy on this sunny evening!

Drink of the Day 144 – Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Bier Lemon (50cl @ 2.5% abv)
Available in store for £2.20
A Bit of Background – If you are enjoying the sun as much as we are, the Schöfferhofer Hefeweizen Lemon Bier is the perfect choice. A naturally cloudy lemonade meets tart wheat beer.
Peter Schöffer, the inventor of letterpress printing, had a great passion for beer alongside his craft. However, his taste is particular and hard to please, and so he decided to begin making great beer in his own home. Thanks to him, today we have a range of Schöfferhofer beers to try. With an ABV of only 2.5%, this beer drinks like a refreshing spritz, instead of your traditional bitter beer.
Nose – Sweet-tart grapefruit, light breadiness.
Palate - Refreshing lemon zest, banana and clove.
Final Thoughts – There is still time to enjoy the last bit of sun with a can of Schöfferhofer. Take a visit to Luvians and grab a can for the garden!
