Building work has just started on a new community shop, post office and café in Pitton. The new shop is being built as a new extension to the village hall and plans to open in September.

The majority of funds to pay for the work have been raised from the residents of Pitton, Firsdown, Farley and East Grimstead via a community share scheme. The project also received a grant from Wiltshire Council’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund for Rural Hubs, which will pay for part of the build and will also cover equipment, fixtures and fittings for the shop and café.

MP for Salisbury John Glen said: “This project is a model of what can be achieved when the community pulls together. I hope it will thrive and provide inspiration for other local villages, which are exploring similar initiatives.”

We are delighted to announce that the Pitton Community Shop has been awarded a grant of £97,000 from the Wiltshire Shared Prosperity Fund for Rural Hubs.

When we add this to your pledges of £210,000 this means we will have enough funds to to complete not just the build, but the full fit out of the shop. This includes fridges, freezers and shelving, IT equipment for the office, and tables, chairs and a good coffee machine for the cafe. Two other small grant applications are in progress to cover the last remaining £8,000 for stock and working capital.

The Wiltshire Council grant required that we demonstrate that the project had support from the community and could fund the majority of the project. Your pledges of £210,000 allowed us to evidence both of these things and we are immensely grateful for your support in making our new community shop a reality.

We will be launching the Community Share Scheme, to allow you to turn your pledges into share purchases, from the 10th to the 30th November. We have planned two public meetings in Pitton village hall on Saturday 8th November at 11 a.m. and Sunday 9th November at 4 p.m. where you will will have an opportunity to pick up a share prospectus and ask any questions about the share scheme or the shop plans. Providing we collect your pledges by the end of November the project is still on track to open the new shop in September next year.

Alongside this the committee are working hard to put everything else in place including policies and procedures, fit out plans and discussions with the Post Office. If you are able to help us on any of these, please contact Brian Cudby on [email protected] or Lorna Taylor on [email protected].

Thankyou to those who have already offered help with fit out plans, recruitment, site preparation and reviewing documents.

Again - THANKYOU!

Thank you to John Glen MP for stopping by and supporting our endeavour.

Community store update!

Last week we gained planning permission from Wiltshire Council, with a condition that we include a bicycle rack. A huge milestone passed! We are grateful to those of you who left supportive comments on the planning portal, as it demonstrated that there is a good deal of community support for the project.

We are waiting to hear the result of our application to the Wiltshire Shared Prosperity Fund, where we applied for funding to cover half of the cost of the detailed planning stage.

Legal work to agree the lease of the land from the village hall and work to gain the necessary permissions from the Charity Commission is progressing well. Our thanks go to the village hall committee for moving this forward promptly.

We were pleased to give an update to Firsdown Parish Council last week and we also received a donation from them towards the project. Their support is very much appreciated.

We have organised a fun Race Night on 12th October to aid our fundraising. We do hope you can come along! 🐎

Come along on 12th October for all the excitement of a night at the races! 🐎

On the evening you can bet on the horses (and win cash prizes), or just watch the races while enjoying a light supper and quiz. All the funds raised will go to the Pitton Community Shop project.

We are ’selling’ horses in advance for £5 each, so if you would like to be a racehorse owner for the evening (and win a prize if your horse wins) please let me know by 9th October so that your horse can be entered on the race card. You also have the opportunity to name your own horse (nothing rude please!).

If you would like to sponsor a whole race, which can be named after your business or club, the cost will be £20. There are no prizes here but your venture will get a bit of free advertising in the announcements.

We hope to see you there!

Funding update!

We are grateful to all those who invested in the Pioneer Community Share Scheme. We managed to raise the target of £31,000 in three weeks which allows us to move ahead with our planning application.

Salisbury’s MP, John Glen, recently visited Pitton Village Hall on to support the team planning a new community shop and Post Office in Pitton. Pitton is at risk of losing a valuable community asset once the current shop and Post Office closes in 2026. Work to build a new premises next door to the village hall is already in progress, with plans being developed and fundraising underway to add to the £40,000 already raised in donations and community shares.

Mr. Glen said: “I have always been an ardent supporter of community businesses. Their positive impact on rural communities is well-evidenced in terms of improving the local economy, reducing social isolation and providing opportunities for young and old alike. I am very impressed by the support already shown by local residents and the highly professional work that has been put in to get to this stage”.

Brian Cudby, Chair of the Community Benefit Society set up to develop the new shop, said: “Pitton Community Shop and Post Office will serve the village and local community as well as passing trade. It will stock local produce wherever possible, giving local farmers and other suppliers an outlet for their produce. Many local people rely on the shop for everything from groceries to prescription collection to banking. The local community have been hugely supportive, in terms of helping us raise funds or providing pro-bono work or services. We already have a long list of people who would like to volunteer to staff the shop, and it’s a great way to get out in the community, meet new people or gain work experience.”

Van Gore, Chair of the Village Hall Committee said “The Village Hall is delighted to have the opportunity to help facilitate an exciting community shop development in Pitton. Excellent progress has been achieved and there’s a tangible sense throughout the village of gathering momentum towards an important, shared goal”.
