Domaine Guy Allion, Toucheronde

A delicious blend of Gamay, Cabernet Franc and Cot (Malbec) from one of our favourite producers.

Ripe summery aromas of red and black fruits, think strawberry, blackcurrant, cherry and raspberry. The palate is similar with soft spices to accompany the delicious fruit.

Rounded, mellow fruit, soft and subtle tannins with a finish that lingers beautifully.

Serve lightly chilled, pair perhaps with poached salmon and new potatoes.

Amadeus Treixadura

An iconic wine that pays tribute to the art and culture of Galicia.

Amadeus has been a pioneering reference in the world of viticulture and art since the 1990's. Each harvest featured a work by artists such as Virxilio, Vidal Souto, Isaac Díaz Pardo and many others. Years later this wine returns and does so in collaboration with the Ourense painter, Alexandro - in charge of the design of the work that dresses the bottle - expressing the link between the wine and the land, its art and its culture.

100% Treixadura.

Amadeus comes from the slopes of Vina Costeira's San Cibrao estate; a privileged place that is also difficult to cultivate, due to its orientation and distribution in “costeiras”, which is the secret to obtaining the highest quality Treixadura.

Terras Gauda 'O Rosal' Albarino

Terras Gauda O Rosal from Rias Baixas is a zesty, minerally and aromatic Spanish white.

The O Rosal, is a selective blend of the best Albarino grapes in the O Rosal subzone of Galicia, which is then mixed with the indigenous grapes Loureira and Caino Blanco..

A greenish-yellow in colour, this wine has a generous nose of ripe peach, aromatic herbs such as hints of bay leaf and mint, orange blossom, mandarin and orange peel.

On the palate, it is round with hints of mineral and earthy memories. It finishes with crispness and minerality, revealing its stunning structure, density and balanced acidity. Edged with superb acidity and a bristling minerality this reminds one of a really good Riesling. These are wines of outstanding freshness and life.

The Terras Gauda winery was founded in the O Rosal Valley, within the territory encompassing the Rias Baixas Denomination of Origin. Terras Gauda is notable for owning around 85% of its own vineyards; the remainder of the grapes are provided under strict quality control agreements with local growers. Having this control allows the estate to pick later and more selectively (and over a greater period of time) than most others ensuring greater maturity and higher sugar levels in the grapes. The sheltered aspect of the vineyards surrounded by forest, the proximity to the Mino and to the sea, also promotes ripening. The result is wines that taste exceptionally fresh and bright. They employ modern techniques so as to produce clean, consistent wines driven by their aromatics, but carefully limit the chemical substances which are used on the vineyard, so as to protect the land.

Baron de Lustrac 1975 Vintage Armagnac would make a great birthday present or anniversary present for anyone born or married in 1975.

Armagnac is also a region, part of the southwest of France and is divided into three “sous-appellations” : Bas-Armagnac, Ténarèze and Haut-Armagnac. Armagnac, along with its more illustrious relative Cognac, are the two most famous of French Brandies.

Baron de Lustrac is a small Armagnac brand known as an “éleveur-negociant” or “merchant-producer”. As an éleveur-negociant, Baron de Lustrac work with a small number producers and growers (20) throughout the Armagnac region. The producers will age the Armagnac in oak barrels in their own cellars but Baron de Lustrac are responsible for monitoring the ageing of the eau de vie, blending and bottling the final product. Thus Lustrac have a huge amount of control over the final product.

All their Armagnacs, like this Baron de Lustrac 1975 Vintage Armagnac, are bottled at their bottling cellar in Nogaro. Once distilled the crystal-clear, colourless spirit is aged in 420 litre oak barrels made from Limousin or Monlezun oak from Gers. It is here, in the barrel, that the Armagnac leaches vanillins and tannins from the toasted oak which lend the spirit colour and flavour.

The depth of colour and complexity of flavour increase all the time the spirit is aged in cask ranging from pale straw through to rich amber. It takes about 10 years in barrel for the true quality of Armagnac emerge. It is at this point that all the balance, complexity and roundness one expects from a quality spirit begins to come through.

As it aged for even longer periods the Armagnac becomes darker in colour and softer, smoother and more elegant on the palate whilst aromas and flavours of prunes, violets, fig, honey, butterscotch and rancio develop. Part of the alcohol evaporates naturally during the long years in cask – this is known as “la part des anges” (the angel’s share).

These rare vintage Armagnacs are available in strictly limited quantities.

Working holiday for Charles’s birthday with a wonderful visit to Vina Costeira’s Pazo de Toubes vineyard restaurant for a fabulous tasting and lunch with his better half (and FD) Victoria, and daughter Martha who is currently studying at Santiago de Compostela university.

Many thanks to Manu Castro, head winemaker, for the insightful walk through the stunning vineyards and multi-award winning wines, including a very recent 96 points and Gold medal from Decanter magazine for our Via Barrosa Albariño!

Lost in a Field Pet Nat... new 2023 vintage!

2023 - the Goldilocks vintage - not too hot, not too cool, not too much rain, it was just right.

Lost in a Field "Frolic" 2023 pét-nat is a blend of six heritage grape varieties from five vineyards in four English counties from Herefordshire in the West, through Wiltshire and Hampshire to Kent in the East, most of which were planted in the 1980s and 1990s with the oldest being established in 1973.

Made from a blend of Madeleine Angevine and Huxelrebe for aromatics and intensity, Schönburger for beautiful perfume, Reichensteiner and Müller-Thurgau for acidity and hand staining, red fleshed Triomphe d'Alsace for colour.

The colour of the 2023 Frolic sits somewhere between cloudy pink grapefruit and pale coral pink with a delicate, pretty hue.

A cloud burst of foaming white bubbles when poured, the initial aromas are delicately floral with rose petal, elderflower and hedgerow flowers, followed by a palate of quince, strawberry, cut lime and with a grapefruit skin pithiness.

There’s a saline / quinine character that provides G&T-like refreshment and the featherlight body (just 9.5%) gives great drinkability.

Fruity, fun, fault free, zero sulphur English pét-nat made from heritage grape varieties from old vines.

Drink the rainbow!

Alheit Vineyards Cartology 2023

"This is one of the true bargains of the South African fine wine scene and the 2023 is the best yet. We can’t endorse this wine more and recommend adding a few bottles or cases to your collection.

The wine is mineral-driven, tense and complex, with layers of citrus, wet stone, and savoury spice. Stunning purity, bright acidity and a long, mineral finish.

Chris Alheit continues to refine his approach, incorporating larger vessels, concrete tanks and foudres, enhancing precision and elegance. With exceptional balance and ageing potential, Cartology 2023 is not to be missed."

96 Points | Tim Atkin MW

"This pioneering white blend, paying tribute to the diversity and history of the Cape, is a cuvée of Chenin Blanc and 6% Semillon in 2023, using components from the Skurfberg, Piekenierskloof, Malmesbury, the Paardeberg, Bottelary, False Bay and (for the first time) Tygerberg.

Mineral, sappy, spicy and effortlessly focused like a rifle site, it has layers of oatmeal, citrus and wet stones and a savoury finish."

95 Points | Vinous, Neal Martin

The 2023 Cartology has slightly more Sémillon in the blend this year. As usual, this is a blend of what he considers to be his best parcels. It has one of the classiest bouquets you will find in a South African white this vintage: yellow fruit, a soupçon of peach skin, lanolin and whisked egg whites. Stunning delineation and purity. The palate is very well balanced with a bright and tensile opening.

This has a killer line of acidity and is full of tension and complexity, concluding with a mineral-driven finish that has a slightly waxy/resinous texture.

Very long. Very classy.
