Did you know the average household in Powys throws out £720 worth of potentially edible food every year!!!

That's £46 million pounds a year going in the bin, which we then have to pay again to dispose of!

Whilst it's great to recycle this via our weekly food collection service, we can all save money and reduce waste by freezing food at home before it goes off.

Our research shows that our 5 friends pictured are most commonly put in the rubbish bin, when they could have easily been be recycled.

Most councils in the UK accept these items for recycling, and you can always check your local area to be sure by using the recycling locator on our website.

There are some types of toughened glass designed for reuse and made more heat resistant such as Pyrex dishes and these are chemically different and have a different melting point to your normal jars and bottles, so they cannot be recycled at home.

Likewise ceramics e.g. crockery. Preferably these items should be reused via charity shops, but, if not they can go in the rubble skips at our HWRC's. This all gets crushed up and graded and used as aggregate in the local construction industry.

Mae'r rhain yn cael eu gwasgu a'u graddio a'u defnyddio fel agregau yn y diwydiant adeiladu lleol.

Did you know? Your food waste gets recycled at anaerobic digestion plants into renewable green bio-gas and a fertiliser type output. Across the UK, the anaerobic digestion of just domestic food waste alone, already reduces our imports of fertiliser by £25m and reduces CO2 emissions by 200,000 tonnes per annum! So lets recycle more!

NEWS: Card recycling banks to be removed from community recycling sites

When community recycling sites were first introduced there were no kerbside recycling collections. The sole purpose of these site's was to allow residents to recycle household items close to home. However, with the weekly kerbside recycling service now well established, card, along with other items, can be easily recycled from home.

Did you know? Powys residents go through about 2 million aerosols a year! If you stacked them end to end they would reach from Welshpool to London and back!
