Ninety-two-year-old Norman is one of Asda's longest-standing customers who's been shopping at our West Bridgford store in Nottingham for nearly 60 years.

Norman pops in every day – sometimes twice a day – to pick up his groceries and have a chat with colleagues. His favourite food is pork loin steaks. Sometimes he even shops for a younger friend.

Norman is a former bus driver and mechanic and served for three years in the RAF as part of his National Service. He either walks or takes the car for the three-quarters of a mile journey. He said: "I started going to the store when me and my late wife Joan moved up here from Clifton estate. It's just so handy, it's like a corner shop and I can always get whatever I want. Everyone is so friendly at the store, especially those on security who always ask me if I'm walking or driving."

Colleagues at the store say they love seeing Norman. The store's community champion Christine said: "Norman's lovely, he's really friendly and chatty and always makes me laugh. He's such a character. It's amazing that he's been coming to our store for so long." Security colleague Paul said: "He's a lovely man. He lights up when he talks to people, he's just so friendly." Pizza counters colleague Emma said: "It's always a pleasure to see Norman", while operations manager Mel Ingles described him as "incredible customer".

When one of our older customers told delivery driver Andrew from our Corby store that she needed to post a birthday card for her great-grandson but wasn't feeling well he immediately offered to do it for her.

The lady's grand-daughter was so grateful to Andrew that she posted on the Facebook group Original Corby Chats Back to thank him, saying: "I would like to put on here how helpful and kind Asda delivery drivers based at Corby are ... After he posted it he called her to let her know that he'd done it. What a wonderful person to do this on what I can imagine is a long work day."

Andrew has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness with senior Asda director Sam Carolan saying: "Andrew’s care and thoughtfulness perfectly reflect the values we strive to promote at Asda — going the extra mile, looking after our customers, and making a real difference in their lives."

Cafe manager Helen from our Boldon store has been called a "true angel" for making sure two children got their kids' meals when their mum's phone ran out of power and she had no other means of paying.

The mum was in the queue with her children when she realised what had happened. She posted on the Parent Network South Tyneside Facebook group to say: "While waiting, the kids opened their juice and drank half of it (as kids do) by the time I got to the till and realised I couldn’t pay, I genuinely felt like I was going to pass out from the shame. But then came Helen a true angel. She stepped in with the kindest words and said, 'That’s on me.' Just like that. No judgement, no fuss just pure compassion. I managed to get back to the car, charge my phone and pay the amount I owed. Thank you Helen from the bottom of my heart. You turned a stressful moment into one I’ll always remember for your kindness."

Helen said: "The lady was lovely, but was getting a bit stressed, so I just said to her to take a seat and settle the children and don't worry about paying – you can't have children going hungry, can you?"

Happy Father's Day to dads everywhere – including Adam, Sean, Mark, Keith and Ed who work alongside their children at our St Leonards-on-Sea store.

Customer trading manager Adam, who's 53, will be celebrating with his 19-year-old twins Alfie and Jack, who work in the warehouse and on ambient. Adam said: "They're both in different departments but I'm always watching them in the background and am there for support if they need it. It's nice having them in the store with me. It's good to have so many dads working at the store with their children – it's a real friendly store."

Porter Sean works alongside his daughter Jess, who works in the store's bakery. He said: "I see a lot more of Jess now that we are working together. It's a great place to work." Section leader Mark, who's been at the store for more than 10 years, works alongside his son Louis and daughter Ruby. Mark said: "My kids joined me at store during the pandemic. I don't treat them any different to any other colleague – we are all equal when we are at work. They are a couple of good kids and they work really hard. I give them a lot of respect, and they give me a lot of respect too."

Store manager Steven said: “It is really nice seeing parents and their children working side by side on the shop floor. Working together offers the opportunity to strengthen both professional and personal bonds, creating a shared experience that is both rare and rewarding. Happy Father's day to all our dads in store.”

A customer has got in touch to thank Paul and Connor from our Portadown store for helping her eight-year-old autistic niece who got upset after she dropped her hot chocolate on the floor.

The girl and her family were on a car journey from Dublin when they stopped at the store's cafe for a bite to eat. They were picking up a few groceries when the girl accidentally dropped her drink. Food hall manager Paul stopped to check she was OK and told her not to worry, while warehouse colleague Connor cleared up the spill and got her a replacement hot chocolate. Her aunt was so touched that she wrote to the store to say: "Two male staff members came to help as she was quite upset and they were fantastic with her. She was worried about the mess and they told her it was fine and not a problem. A little while later one of the members of staff found us in the store with a replacement hot chocolate for her. They went above and beyond in helping and we are all adjusting to finding out how to handle her emotions as it's all very new to us so I want to thank them. They made sure we had great day by not making a deal of the mess and replacing the drink. It could have really gone the opposite way but their actions really helped. The staff in that store are fantastic."

Paul said: "I'm glad we helped put a smile back on her face."

There's no place like gnome for Asda customer Mandy who's built up an incredible collection of 72 of our gnomes in the front garden of her home in Kent.

Mandy, who gets her gnomes from our Kings Hill store, only bought her first gnome six years ago, but immediately began to build a collection. She said: "They always look so happy and that's why I like them. The gnomes just make everyone happy and they cheer people up. We have people drive past then reverse and pull over. Then they knock on the door and ask if they can take photos. When I open the door they always say they expect some eccentric old woman to answer! All the delivery drivers who call always ask if they can take a picture too and I've got a school just round the corner so the children always stop and look at them on their way home."

The gnome collection includes Father and Mrs Christmas, a king and queen, a bride and groom, a pirate, a Grenadier Guard, an old sailor, a surfer, a fairy and a fisherman. Mandy's favourites are a gnome enjoying a cocktail and one cooking at the barbecue: "They just make you feel like you're on your summer holidays."

A customer at our Bodmin store was so taken with the special bond between Asda customer Jack and his six-year-old son Archie that she bought them an Asda gift card and left it at a checkout as a surprise.

Archie – who has a rare genetic condition called Pompe – is a regular visitor to the store where his nan Tasha works on the pizza counter. Customer trading manager Jacqui, who was working that day, said: "The lady loved seeing the interaction between father and son and Archie's cheerfulness and decided to give them a gift. It was a lovely gesture."

The story's been generating lots of love after it was shared to the Bodmin's Voice Facebook group. Tasha, who's worked at the store since it opened 25 years ago, said: "I can't tell you how emotional I was when I was told what this beautiful lady had done. When I was told about what had happened I cried as it was so nice. I hope she realises what a special lady she is and just how appreciated her gesture was."

And Jack said: "I was lost for words and overwhelmed by the kindness. I've put the gift card away for a rainy day. I'm a single parent so I know it will come in handy at some point."

When she's not serving customers at our Tweedmouth store's bakery Susie is making care home residents smile and relive happy memories with her song and dance act.

Susie takes her Trip Down Memory Lane routine to a number of care homes in the Tweedmouth and Coldsteam area, including the one where her 88-year-old dad, Bob, is a resident. She said: "I absolutely love singing to the residents, it's just so rewarding. I take the residents back to the Sixties mainly. I do Lulu, Cilla Black, Sandie Shaw, The Beatles and Roy Orbison. I always end with We'll Meet Again though."

Stacey, activities and well-being co-ordinator at Birchill care home, which is one of the homes Susie visits, said: "There's nothing but good things to say about Susie. She's a beautiful woman as well as an entertainer. She's just amazing, remarkable. She comes to us once a month and if I have an event on she comes. On the second time she came she knew everybody's name which was so personal and so lovely."

Home delivery driver Drew came to the rescue when 94-year-old customer Mr Wilcox slipped on the floor, banging his head and badly hurting his leg.

Drew, who'd only started working at our Derby store a couple of weeks before, was bringing in Mr Wilcox's shopping when he slipped on a rug and fell before Drew could catch him. Drew phoned for an ambulance, looked after Mr Wilcox until it arrived, and called his daughter to let her know what was happening. Drew even put his shopping away for him.

Drew said: "I just did what anybody else would do to be honest. I was talking to him while we waited for an ambulance and kept him calm and told him that I wasn't going to leave him. He was apologising but I said he had nothing to apologise for. His speech then started to get a bit slurred which made me think that he'd banged his head too when he went down. I was pleased when the ambulance crew came and they said to be that I'd done a good job."

Mr Wilcox's daughter Janet said: "I'd like to thank Drew for the way he looked after my dad when he fell, reassured me over the phone and waited with him until the ambulance arrived. I am eternally grateful. My dad is recovering nicely."

When 21-year-old Jak from our Coalville supermarket spotted that two girls were struggling to pay for the sweets and chocolates they were getting with a bank card he immediately thought about how he hoped someone would help his own little sister in that situation and decided to pay for them himself.

Jak, who's in his final year studying International Business at Loughborough University, said: "I was just walking past the checkouts and saw these girls, aged about ten or eleven. Their bank card wasn't working and neither was their phone app. They had no cash on them and their parents weren't with them. I just said I'd pay for the shopping for them and they were very grateful. It was only about £5 so I didn't mind. One of their dads came in the next day to thank me and offered to pay me back, but I just said it was fine. I have a younger sister, Connie, who's 12 and I'd like to think that someone would help her if she found herself in a similar situation."

Jak, who started working at the store in August, has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness.

As part of our 60th birthday celebrations, our community champions have been celebrating the local heroes who make a difference to the local area by presenting them with an Asda community diamond award.

They've been saying thank you to hundreds of community diamonds across the UK from a cross-section of the local charities, groups and good causes they support. Our Reddish store's community champion Laura picked out lead volunteer Bernard from The Heaton Norris Community Centre in Stockport as a recipient of a community diamond award for all his tireless work.

Laura said: "Bernard is an unsung hero, constantly going the extra mile, visiting people in hospital, making sure if he has not seen an elderly person or family, checking in on them, taking food parcels, or bringing them to the community centre for support. No matter what is thrown at him, and the challenges he faces, he has an incredible smile and warm welcome for everyone. I could wax lyrical about Bernard's infectious commitment to making a real impact and changed so many lives for the better."

Twenty-three-year-old Zoe, who works part-time in the pharmacy at our Gloucester store while she studies nursing at University of Gloucestershire, used her caring skills to the full to look after a customer who was having epileptic seizures.

The man, who's in his 20s and uses a wheelchair, suspected he was about to have a seizure, so Zoe made sure he took his medication, put a screen up to give him some privacy, checked all the information on his medical ID, timed his seizures and stayed by his side until he recovered.

Zoe said: "I was concerned about him. It can be quite worrying knowing that at any moment you could be in a highly vulnerable situation and have no control over what may happen. All I wanted to do was make him feel safe and know that if he did have a seizure someone familiar would be with him."

Pharmacist Claire pictured here with Zoe, said: "When she helped the gentleman she made him feel safe by constantly asking questions, making sure the surrounding area was safe and importantly protecting his dignity by getting a screen in place. Zoe is what proud to be Asda is all about." Zoe has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award.

To celebrate our 60th birthday, our community champions have been saying thank you to the local heroes and good causes who make a difference in our communities by surprising them with grants from the Asda Foundation.

One of the groups receiving £1,000 is Inverness-based charity Spokes For Folks which provides trike and adapted bike rides for elderly people and those with limited mobility.

Each ride is piloted by trained volunteers who help break down barriers caused by social isolation and disability.

Community champion Kylie from our Inverness store said: "It is such a heartwarming initiative and it’s amazing the places they manage to take people that they otherwise wouldn’t get to see. I joined them for a ride recently and the trikes are incredible, making for a comfortable and smooth journey for their passengers".

And Vonnie from Spokes For Folks said: "When we received the grant, the Asda Foundation also gifted us a generous hamper of goodies for our volunteers, along with waterproof robes, blankets, hats and gloves – perfect for keeping our passengers warm, dry and shaded from the sun! Such a thoughtful gesture, and everyone’s loving the added comfort on their rides.”

Sisters Rachel and Paula have clocked up nearly 60 years between them at our Bradford store – following in the footsteps of their mum, Jennifer who worked there for 28 years.

Rachel is a bakery colleague while younger sister Paula, works on home shopping. Rachel first joined Asda aged 17 and spent five years at the store. She returned in October 1995 with Paula joining her a couple of months later. Their mum, who worked as a chilled colleague, retired in 2012.

Rachel said: "We all loved working together. I sometimes think the managers paid mum to keep me and Paula in check! It was a special time. It's lovely working with my sister though as we're very close and get on so well. Although we are in different departments we have our breaks together. It's a lovely place to work, I wouldn't work anywhere else. Everyone, customers and colleagues are just so friendly, it's just like one big family.”

Gillian from our Kilmarnock store turned detective when one of our older customers lost her purse and was getting upset.

Earlier in the day Gillian had called a taxi on the customer’s behalf, but shortly after she left the store, Gillian received a phone call from the customer to say that she'd left her purse in the cab after paying the fare.

Gillian contacted the taxi company, managed to track down the missing purse and then returned it to the customer's home. Gillian, who's a security colleagues and has worked at the store for four years, said: "I think it's really important to look out for people in our local community. Sometimes it's the small things like something as simple as making a phone call that can make a big difference in someone else’s day."

And store manager Lisa, who nominated Gillian for an Asda service superstar award, said: "Gillian’s quick thinking and compassion reflect the values we stand for, and we’re incredibly proud to have her on our team."

Asda customer Lisa has posted on Facebook about the fantastic service she received from Topher from our Rushden store when she popped in to ask about a donation for a fun day to raise money for the Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital.

Lisa, who posted a photo of herself with Topher on the Sharnbrook Community Sports Centre page, said: "I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Topher who went more than above and beyond his role. Not only did he do his best to track down the person in charge of fundraising during a busy time of the day, but when he saw we were raising money for a cancer charity without hesitation, and to my amazement, he then paid for our celebration cake. Having sadly lost his mum to cancer in 2016, he didn't hesitate and wouldn't take no for an answer in offering his support to a charity close to his heart. Thank you Topher, what an absolute legend... we need more Tophers in the world."

The fun day held to mark Sharnbrook Community Centre's 20th birthday raised £700. Asda Rushden community champion Lauren, who volunteered at the event, said: "Keep shining Topher, you are amazing and we are proud to have you in our store."

When Stephen from our Chaucer Road store in Sheffield saw a customer getting upset after she'd left her purse at home and had no other means of payment he stepped in and paid for her shopping himself.

And when she asked how she was going to repay him the £12 he just said not to worry and to pay the kindness forward instead. Stephen, who’s a home delivery driver, was on his day off and doing his own shopping with his wife, Kathryn, when he saw the lady getting flustered in the self scan area.

He said: "I saw she was getting upset and panicking so I just tapped my own bank card and paid for her shopping. It was just a spur of the moment thing. She was very grateful. If everyone did a random act of kindness every day the world would be a better place."

Home shopping driver Damon from our Cardiff Coryton store was making his final delivery of the day when he saw a woman being given CPR by the side of the road. Knowing time was of the essence, he used his local knowledge to drive straight to the nearby Welsh Blood Service clinic and grab a defibrillator.

The woman was having a cardiac arrest and when he returned to the scene a few minutes later a number of doctors and nurses from the Royal Glamorgan Hospital were helping her. They immediately used the defibrillator Damon had brought with him. He said: "After three shocks to the heart with the defib, the woman began to have a pulse again, which was such a relief and a few moments later the ambulance arrived. A nurse later called the store to speak to my manager and said that the woman was now okay."

Home shopping manager Lisa has now nominated Damon for an Asda service superstar award. She said: "Myself and the team are very proud of Damon's quick thinking and fast response. A lot of people would have panicked, but Damon was calm and had it all under control."

An 89-year-old customer who was struggling to place an online shopping order has thanked David from our Gosforth store for taking the time to drive to her home to show her how to do it.

The lady was so grateful that she sent a handwritten to the store saying: "I am almost 90, hard of hearing and what I call 'modern technology illiterate' but have managed my shop until recently. I phoned up Asda and spoke to David, but we could not resolve it over the phone so he then came to my house. He was so courteous, and patient beyond belief and had a very pleasant way of explaining details. I'm sure he makes an ideal employee and I wish him the best."

David said: "She was such a lovely lady and I was happy to help her. I just spoke slowly and clearly, took my time with her and didn't rush. I sorted out the order and bookmarked the app."

He's now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for his kindness.

Barbara started working at our Billingham store straight from school in 1972 she didn't plan on staying for long ... but 53 years later she's the longest-serving Asda colleague in any of our stores!

Barbara, who works in the bakery, said: "When I found out that I was the longest serving colleague I went "wow, wow I don't believe it" – and I still can't believe it now. I wasn't going to stay that long! I'd planned to get married and have children, that was it. I did all that ... but I stayed as well. I don't regret it at all. I've got no plans to retire at the moment." Barbara has been married to Brian for nearly 40 years, has two sons, David and Richard, and three grand-daughters Holly, who's nine, Rosie, who's four, and five-year-old Izzy.

She said: "Over the years I have made a lot of friends and they have always been there for me and we're like a little family – not just colleagues but the customers as well. I like interacting with them. The customers are very friendly and some will say to me 'are you still here?' Meeting the customers is the best part of the job."

An 80-year-old customer at our Portsmouth store has thanked first aider Paula for catching her when she had an anxiety attack and almost fell down an escalator.

Paula saw that the lady was falling and managed to grab her before sitting her down and talking to her. Section leader Paula, who's worked at the store for 16 years, said: "It could have been much, much worse if she'd fallen. I just got to her in time. After going through some breathing techniques with her I got her a glass of water and just chatted to her and calmed her down, then contacted her partner who came to get her.

“The lady came in the next day and brought me flowers to thank me. I was teary eyed when she came in. It was good to see that she was okay. I’ve been a first aider for about seven years and dealt with many medical emergencies. It is so rewarding to be able to help people.” Paula's now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award for her actions.

Asda community champions from across the UK are taking part in commemorative events to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Our Colne store's community champion Diane helped to put on a party for members of Pendle Sight Support Group and their families. The group, which supports people with limited vision so they can continue living at home, meets once a week in the store's community room.

Diane said: "Everyone had an fantastic time. It really was brilliant – one big get-together. The room was decked out with flags and we had the a big screen showing the VE Day event at Buckingham Palace at the weekend. We also had a singalong to songs like White Cliffs of Dover and Run, Rabbit Run too. It really was a special day and something we had to do. It's important that we still remember days like these.

"Asda provided some of the food for the party but every member of the group also brought something that they'd made too, which is amazing as some of those people can only see shadows. For them to go into a kitchen and make a sausage roll or a cake is so special."

Group chairman Dawn said: "It was a fabulous event and I'd like to thank Diane for all that she does. She is amazing, fantastic. She is so, so supportive of us."

When a customer at our Crawley store realised she didn’t have enough money to buy a pizza and garlic bread so asked for them to be put back, our colleague Billie-Jean stepped in and paid for them herself.

Billie-Jean said: “It was early in morning and the lady was just buying a few groceries, all from the Essentials range. She’d scanned the shopping through the self scan and was counting her money and realised she didn’t have enough cash, so asked me to take off the pizza and garlic bread, which I did. I then tapped my own card and paid for them myself. The lady started crying and said that no-one had ever done anything like that to help her before.

"I was just doing the right thing and didn’t want to think that someone’s children or grandchildren would be going without food.”

Billie-Jean, who’s worked at the store for nine years, has now been nominated for an Asda service superstar award, Store manager Mij said: "Billie-Jean not only, consistently goes above and beyond to ensure our customers are satisfied, but her dedication has made a significant difference to our customers’ everyday experiences. Thank you Billie-Jean for looking after our customers and everything you do."
