We were lucky to have Jeremy Fisher join us on Apple Day and give his recollections about planting this orchard by hand in the early 1970s in Over Stratton. It is the UK's largest traditional orchard and it is magnificent (with a footpath through the middle if you would like to visit). Its not looking its best this autumn but come spring the blossom will be incredible and that will be followed by orchids. We were lucky enough to buy this orchards in 1991 when it was due to be cut down. The apples have been turned into our apple brandy ever since.
In Jeremy's woods "Julian had the foresight to buck the trend again and buy South Harp and the Standard Orchard. This was an act of great courage, the land was cheap because nobody wanted orchards, and a standard orchard, but there were substantial
grants to help grub them out and return to the plough, as happened across hundreds of acres at the time. Well here’s to Julian who had the courage to take on what we planted 50 years ago and make something special out of it, old man Showering would be very happy and proud, I certainly am."

🍎 THE OFFICIAL APPLE DAY! 🍎

We celebrated here at the farm 10 days ago to keep up with our unusually early harvest, but today we’ll be raising another glass to our orchards and to the 1,000 years of c***r makers who came before us here in Kingsbury Episcopi.

Everything we do at Burrow Hill starts in the orchard. These beautiful apples are the raw material for our apple juice, c***r, Somerset C***r Brandy, liqueurs and c***r vinegar.

Here’s to the apples, the orchards and another thousand years of c***r making.

Introducing our brilliant c***r-making duo, Nick and James 🍎

Meet Nick and James. These two look after all things c***r at Burrow Hill, from tasting and bottling to keeping an eye on what’s bubbling away and experimenting with what we might make next.

We asked them to pick their favourites…

Nick: “Keeved is my hero experiment. The bold tannins and gentle acidity match so well with autumnal food as we move through the seasons.”

James: “Perry, because the first time I tried it, it blew me away. It’s great for a party and just as good for a quiet night in. And then the Port Barrel Aged Somerset C***r Brandy, because my dad introduced me to the wonders of both brandy and port.”
