World Discovery Day in Italy🇮🇹

Red or white? Sometimes you just want a bottle that does exactly what you need it to do.

Two bottles we always like having on hand are from Villa Pani, an innovative Piedmont winery that’s close to our hearts here at McMillans.

Led by oenologist Stella Grasso, Villa Pani takes classic Piedmontese grape varieties and gives them a modern, fresh interpretation - from the winemaking to the distinctive packaging.

Our notes…

🍋Gavi DOCG
Made from 100% Cortese grown on the steep slopes of Piedmont, this is an elegant, beautifully balanced white. Expect citrus and orchard fruit on the nose, with delicate white-flower notes. Fresh, dry and easy drinking. 12% ABV.

Pair with grilled seafood, shellfish, fish, chicken or seafood pasta. Also, rather lovely as an aperitif.

🍇Barbera Appassimento Piemonte DOC
Made using the appassimento method, where partially dried grapes bring extra concentration and richness. Expect wild berries, jam, violet, vanilla, fig and almond, followed by a full-bodied, rounded palate and a soft finish. 14% ABV.

Pair with rich pasta dishes, pizza, slow-cooked or grilled meats and game.

Two very different wines. One thing in common: they’re both easy to enjoy.

Wine of the (Bank Holiday) Weekend – Cramele Recas Orange Wine🍊

Make Mine an Orange…!
Orange wines have been popular for some time now, and they are here to stay. Made by fermenting white grapes with extended skin contact to gain a white wine that’s so much bolder in flavour and deeper in colour – yes, orange!
With the weight and texture of a red wine, yet you’ll also find the fresh, citrussy flavours expected of a white, so perfect for easy food pairings. Enjoy with chicken, but also match this bottle with roast lamb. Summer BBQ drinks sorted.

This bottle of Cramele Recas Orange Wine is one of the best. Sourced from one of the most important wineries from Romania and known for their notorious quality standards.

Burnt orange in colour, the nose on this wine is full of pear, quince, and a hint of vanilla. A complex and well-structured wine, there are elegant flavours of stone fruits on the palate with well-integrated tannins and a hint of spice.

Producer Spotlight – Tomatin Whisky Distillery

Behind each bottle on our shelves there is a story to tell. And even better when we can join up with the producer to come along to Malton and share that story with us.

On Tuesday 25 August, as part of Malton Whisky Society we will open our doors to Tomatin Whisky.

Our favourites have to be the Tomatin 12-Year Old Triple Cask for its smoothness, and the Bourbon-casked Tomatin 10-Year Old with its gentle fruit, honeyed sweetness and soft spice. Each defines the Distillery perfectly.

World Discovery Monday in Portugal🇵🇹
Janelas Antigas Vinho Verde

It’s just the weather for us to share a light, fresh wine made by the coast in northeast Portugal. Ideal for summer sipping and the perfect apéritif. It’s the tongue-tingling spritz on opening that makes it this month’s choice.

Produced by the Casa de Vila Verde estate, this may be one of the oldest estates in the area and owned by the Pinto de Mesquita family. The family has been making wine since the 17th century and are one of the original producers of Vinho Verde.

By blending four of the most famous grape varieties of the region, you’ll enjoy a fresh and fruity wine with a great balance of flavour and acidity.

Our notes….
Floral and green fruit notes with minerality. Low alcohol – around 9% ABV
