Schloss Johannisberg sits on a hilltop above the Rhine that has been making wine for 1,200 years, exclusively Riesling since 1720. Over its history, it passed through the hands of Charlemagne, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Duke of Valmy (who sold an entire harvest to a merchant named Gottlieb Mumm, yes, that Mumm), Emperor Francis I of Austria, and Prince Klemens von Metternich. Thomas Jefferson called it "the best in the Rhine without comparison." The poet Stefan Zweig wrote: "You don't drink wine here, you drink centuries."

In 2025, World's Best Vineyards ranked it #2 in the world and #1 in Europe.

The Grünlack Spätlese is their great classic, the wine style they invented, from a single hand-picked, organically farmed vineyard 182 metres above the Rhine. Mirabelle plum, apricot, elderflower, electric acidity, almost velvety on the finish. 96 points from one of the world's foremost Riesling specialists. A drinking window that runs to 2070.
