We were packed to the rafters last Thursday for an evening with Jordan Hillman, who took us through a wee sample of his family owned, Glencadam / Tomintoul range.
Jordans grandfather founded Angus Dundee distillers PLC over 50 years ago and during that time acquired the above distilleries, saving Glencadam distillery from being demolished to make way for a supermarket!
It was anecdotes like this and some remarkably easy drinking, delicious whisky that made for a highly engrossing night.
For me, it is hard to pick a favourite. The16yo Tomintoul and 10yo Glencadam are perfect entry points to the delights of scotch. The different cask expressions, tawny port, oloroso sherry add huge depth and character and are done with such dexterity, the art of the distiller shines through.
The clear crowd favourite was the Glencadam pedro ximenez finish which also happens to have won, Highland whisky of the year 2024 at the World whisky awards.
Speaking of the crowd, what a super bunch of old and new faces, can’t do it without you!
And special mention to Jordan, such a relaxed, engaging host, thank you.

With the sun shining, we're in the mood for something light and juicy:

Delicatevaromas of sour cherry with light spice and hints of Vanilla. The palate is fresh and well balanced with crunchy redcurrant and berry character. Gentle tannins and juicy acidity make it a perfect match for grilled chicken or vegetable risotto.

March's Whisky of the Month comes from Campbeltown's Kilkerran. This limited release 8YO Bourbon cask single malt is bottled at cask strength - 55.6%, with citrus, honey, and vanilla on the nose. The palate is creamy with notes of banoffe pie and custard.

Kicked off our tasting evenings for this year with another visit to Argentina / Brazil in the hands of Neil from Hispa and Nic from Go Brazil.
An intimate crowd had the chance to try some really interesting, top quality fare.
We learnt the history behind the Italian influence on grapes and winemaking that drives current production in parts of Brazil and the importance of altitude and microclimate that produces fabulous wine in Argentina.
Surprise of the night was amount of people who preferred the Don Guerino Sinais Malbec from Brazil to the Domingo Hermanos Malbec from Argentina.
There was also a small amount of the Don Guerino Teroldego left which rather than waste, I took home, and it was a revelation how it had evolved, improved in the hour since we had tried it. Wine of the night for me but it needs decanting to really shine!

A few new wines on our shelves to kick-start the new year.

CASTEL DEL LUPO BARBERA £15.95
This organic l, unoaked Barbera is a new project from Castel del Lupo and has nags of red berry fryit and bright acidity.

BOBAL SERICIS £16.95
a complex old vines, low yielding Bobal from eastern Spain. An indigenous grape variety that is getting more attention for its bouncy and characterful style.

CHATEAU DE CERONS COUCHER DE SOLEIL ORANGE WINE £34.95
a white wine made in the style of a red with fermentation on the skins for 5 weeks. Deep gold with orange reflections, pithy marmalade and gentle peach aromas on the nose, followed by surprising saffron, yellow cider apples and gentle tannins creating a dance of sweet and savoury in the mouth.
