April paints the colours of spring across the dinner table, celebrating new life with festivals like Easter and Eid that bid winter farewell. It’s a time of feasting and this week we showcase wines for this Bank Holiday that bring out the best in the bounty this time of year brings.

Green is the colour of my true love’s eyes, and is reflected in spring greens, fresh peas, broad beans, and asparagus. This pungent spear needs little more than melted butter to shine and is made for fragrant Loire Sauvignons.

Artichokes are here in all their infinite variety. These hoary thistle heads need a bit of love to reveal their tender hearts, but gently simmered and dressed in lemon juice, olive oil and garlic, they make a wonderful side dish. Try an oaked Sauvignon Blanc, one of the rare pairings that works.

Foragers may hunt about in grass verges and plunder the parks for bunches of wild garlic to be whizzed up into a pesto and smeared over leg of lamb or with breadcrumbs on cutlets. Try a powerful dry rosé with this excellent sauce that is great too on pasta or new potatoes.

Spring lamb is a blank canvas to wine, especially red, with almost endless possibilities to delight and surprise. The French would favour a l***y Bordeaux with salt marsh lamb, while a Venetian would choose an Amarone. Lovers of bold new world flavours will indulge in an Oregon Pinot Noir or an Australian Shiraz, and white drinkers can drink lamb with a delicious white Rhône.

Chocolate is a treat we don’t need permission to eat, but Easter is the perfect excuse to indulge without guilt. We love to eat dark chocolate with aged Tawny Port while milk chocolate is delicious with a Moscatel from Portugal.

All the colours of spring are here.

How you paint your dinner table masterpiece is up to you.

Bon appetit!

You may remember Ida’s newsletter following her trip to Jerez last year, and her love for Sherry has only increased since. Here’s her take on a delicious Amontillado she’s been drinking lately.

“Diatomist and their wines always impress me with how the primary fruit of the wines never gets lost among the nuttiness, sweetness or saltiness that can be overpowering in a Sherry, instead leaving a strong impression of green apples, oranges or ripe figs, depending on the style, and a brilliant freshness. Their Amontillado was one of my early favourites when I was first learning about Sherry, and as soon as it returned to our shelves a bottle made its way to my fridge. I’m very happy to report that it is just as good as I remembered, with hazelnuts, dried stone fruits and oranges and the balanced complexity that made Amontillado my favourite style of Sherry. This is absolutely perfect for a meal with many components, or particularly tricky food pairings, but you never go wrong with good olives and salted almonds.”

In last week’s newsletter we heard from Harriet about a few of her favourite discoveries since she joined us four months ago. It inspired us to ask the rest of the team about which bottle they’ve been enjoying recently. First up, here’s Seb’s first taste of a true classic:

“As someone who was relatively new to wine when I joined, what excited me most was the opportunity to expand my horizons. However, nothing could have prepared me for the revelation on one cold December evening when I tried my first Mosel Riesling. I knew that wine could be fresh and light, but nothing prepared me for something so beautifully refreshing, yet sweet and delicious. It tasted of green apple and pear, with the most delightful herbal hints. And, at only 7.5%, I could have had the whole bottle and felt relatively guilt-free.”
