A private visit to Powerscourt Distillery 🥃

Three of our clients joined us for a small group visit set within the grounds of the historic Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow.

Our guests got taken on an amazing walk through the distillery, watching Fercullen Irish Wh***ey come together from grain right through to finished spirit.

Then we moved on to the warehouse tour, which was a real highlight, seeing first hand how cask choice and warehouse conditions shape a wh***ey over time. The kind of detail that's far more interesting to see in person than to have explained.

Things wrapped up with a guided tasting of several Fercullen expressions, time to sit with each pour and talk through what makes them distinct.

A bottle that's been quietly maturing for a while 🥃

Tomatin 1977, Warehouse 6 Collection. Nearly five decades resting in the Highlands, "the softer side of the Highlands" as Tomatin themselves put it, before finally making it into the glass.

Some whiskies are worth the wait.

Michter's has just been crowned the world's #1 Most Admired Wh***ey for the fourth year running 🥃

Drinks International's 2026 rankings put Yamazaki in second and Hibiki in third, with Japanese wh**ky having a particularly strong showing this year, Chichibu landed fourth. Johnnie Walker, Bruichladdich, Ardbeg and Laphroaig also made the top ten.

A good reminder that consistency, not just hype, is what earns respect in this industry.

Not all casks start life the same way. 🍷

Matthew breaks down ex-sherry casks, previously used to age sherry in Spain’s Marco de Jerez, before making their way into wh**ky maturation. Oloroso is a favourite, especially loved by names like Macallan and Dalmore. Pedro Ximénez is another popular choice, known for bringing rich, sweeter notes.

Each one brings something different to the spirit resting inside it. That’s part of what makes cask character so unique.

This is Mackmyra Prestige, matured in a white w**e cask sourced from the Ch*****ne region, giving it a character quite different from a typical single malt.

Big news from us 🥃

After five wonderful years, we're closing the doors on our Royal Exchange shop, but this is very much a "see you soon", not a goodbye.

As Tomoka has grown, so has the need for a London space that can grow with us. We're already working on finding the right new home in the city, and we can't wait to share it with you.

In the meantime, you'll still find us:
📍 St Albans — our tasting room and shop, fully open as always
📍 Lime Street — our head office, open Mon-Fri for client visits

Ever wondered where your cask actually lives?

Every cask is held in a government bonded warehouse, kept under carefully controlled conditions built for long-term maturation. It’s not locked away out of reach, you’re welcome to visit and see your cask in person whenever you’d like.
