Barrel. Hogshead. Butt. You've heard the terms - here's what they actually mean.

Edward breaks down the three most common cask types in under a minute. Size, volume, and why it all matters for what ends up in the glass.

Which one should you own? That depends entirely on what you're looking for and we can help with that.

A distillery silent since 1985, now being reimagined as a five-star whisky resort in the heart of Speyside.

Coleburn's revival is one of the more compelling stories in Scotch right now, not just for what D&M Wi******er are building, but for how they're building it. No outside capital, just a long-term vision funded phase by phase, rooted in the community it sits within.

It's a reminder that the most interesting things happening in this industry aren't always coming from the big names. Sometimes they're coming from independent operators who simply believe in what Scotch whisky stands for.

The number on a whisky bottle isn't a quality score.

It's a legal declaration. It tells you the minimum number of years every drop in that bottle spent maturing in oak. Nothing more, nothing less.

Understanding the difference changes how you read a label entirely.

Back on the road. 🥃

Tamyka recently visited , tucked into the stunning Fife coastline just outside St Andrews. Owned by the Wemyss family, who have called Fife home for over 900 years, Kingsbarns is one of Scotland's newer Lowland distilleries, built from a historic 19th century farm steading and producing a characteristically light, fruity single malt.

A beautiful corner of Scotland worth knowing about.

When you own a whisky cask, the distillery is only part of the story. 🥃

Independent bottlers play a quietly important role too. They source casks directly from distilleries, mature the spirit under their own stewardship, and bring it to market as single cask releases, often with a level of transparency and detail that official distillery bottlings rarely match.

For cask owners, understanding that relationship matters. Bottling through a reputable independent bottler is one of the most common ways to eventually realise the value of a cask, and choosing the right partner for that process can make a meaningful difference to the outcome.

The post-Covid boom pushed cask prices to levels that were never going to hold. That correction has now run its course.

Our Senior Whisky Advisor, Robert, shares his perspective on where the whisky market stands today and why the current landscape, for those paying attention, is more interesting than the headlines suggest.

Today the world raises a glass. 🥃

World Whisky Day is one of those rare moments when an entire industry pauses, breathes in, and remembers why it fell in love with whisky in the first place.

The craft. The patience. The liquid that changes in the barrel for years before anyone even thinks about opening a bottle.

We think that's worth celebrating.

Happy from everyone at Tomoka Fine & Rare.
