This week, Jane Masters MW recommends the 'Filius' Chardonnay from Vasse Felix, Western Australia’s founding winery 🇦🇺

“Pale yellow in the glass with a sophisticated mineral and wet stone nose, this Chardonnay is a vibrant explosion of passionfruit, plum, and sour yellow fruits. It is the quintessential choice for a Spring garden lunch with its refreshing stone fruit flavours and distinct saline edge providing a crisp, elegant counterpoint to sun-drenched afternoons 🌞

The name of this wine, Filius, in Latin means "son of," and this wine is crafted as the vibrant, early-drinking sibling to the estate’s powerhouse flagship. While the parent wine is built for the cellar, Filius is designed to be enjoyed right now – fresher, brighter, and full of life. It’s the work of winemaking genius Virginia Willcock, who shifted the winery’s focus away from making dozens of varieties to instead focus on perfecting just two: Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The estate is named after Thomas Vasse, a French seaman lost at sea, with "Felix", Latin for “lucky”, added by founder Dr Tom Cullity in hopes of a better fate for his vines. You’ll even spot a stylised falcon on the label, a nod to the peregrine falcons Cullity once used to protect his precious fruit from native birds. This heritage, combined with 50 years of winemaking mastery, results in a Chardonnay that perfectly captures one of Australia’s finest wine regions in a glass.”

Today, we celebrate International Sauvignon Blanc Day! 🌏

Whether you’re a fan of the zingy, flinty notes of a Sancerre or the tropical, sun-drenched punch of a Marlborough pour, there is a style of “Savvy B” to suit every palate – including this stunning Pouilly-Fumé picked by Luke from Majestic Wirral. The perfect start to the long weekend! 🌞🥂

Sauvignon Blanc is famous for its distinct "green" flavour profile, which includes notes of freshly cut grass, green bell pepper, asparagus, and pea shoots. This is caused by chemical compounds called methoxypyrazines.

Cooler climates produce more herbaceous notes, while warmer climates tend to push the flavour profile towards tropical fruit, such as passionfruit, mango, and white peach.
