She’s LOUD, she’s full, she’s bright, she’s the cool Australian cousin that everyone loves. Her names Betty and my does she scream! Your Fuggle & Golding Tap House Wine of the Week is Screaming Betty, a Vermentino from Delinquente Wine Co
Vermentino is traditionally a light skinned grape found in italian wine but the maniacs at Delinquente Wine Co in the Riverland, South Australia have chucked a bunch of Italian grapes in that hot, dry, red dirt that they call home.
I absolutely love New World wines because they take familiar varieties and let the climate and terroir do something completely different with them, giving you the grape you know, but with a whole new expression of it. Basically, give it sunshine and a bit of stress and it’s happy as Larry. The Riverland’s sandy, loamy soils and big sunny days help it get beautifully ripe while those cooler nights keep the acidity nice and zippy. The result? Fresh, juicy, citrusy Vermentino with loads of ripe fruit and a lovely salty/mineral edge, rather than something flat and flabby — Italy went on holiday to Australia and frankly, she ain’t leaving.
Now our Betty is a little pricy but that’s the beauty of the Fuggle & Golding Tap House Wine of the Week, you can try those big beautiful bottles without opening a full one and breaking the bank.
