Hello Hurley,

We wanted to be open with you about two services we're having to think hard about: newspapers and the Post Office.

📰 Newspapers: the shop keeps around 16p from every £1 paper. After Smiths News' weekly delivery charge it's nearer 8p, and over the winter papers are likely to cost us money. More than a third go back unsold, and they take around six hours of work every week. We're also asking ourselves whether we can keep reserving papers. When a reserved paper isn't paid for or collected, or someone takes one from the reserved pile that isn't theirs, the person who ordered it goes without and our team takes the frustration.

📮 Post Office: we often hear that it brings people into the shop. We've watched this over time and found it isn't really the case. Over three weeks we counted, and of 31 Post Office customers only 5 bought anything else. The other 26 used the Post Office and left. The Post Office also takes up valuable space in a small shop. That space could hold more of the products you come to us for, which would do much more to keep the shop going.

No decision has been made on either. We want the shop to be here for the village for years to come, so if newspapers or the Post Office matter to you, please tell us, here or in the shop. And next time you pop in, picking up anything else from our range really does make a difference.

Thank you for all your support.
Vanessa and the team, Hurley Village Shop and Cafe
