Au Bon Climat Knox Alexander Pinot Noir 2020
Au Bon Climat translates as “a well-exposed vineyard” a name suiting the coastal position of the vineyards, with its benevolent Pacific fog and cooling breeze. Making the most of these conditions Au Bon Climat buy clones from Burgundy. This contributes to creating wines which emulate the restraint and finesse of Burgundy and France with a magic touch of New World flair.
Named after Jim Clendenen’s son Knox, this wine is from the finest lots of Pinot Noir from the estate Le Bon Climat and Bien Nacido Vineyard since 1999. These two vineyards, separated only by the Sisquoc River, have slow growing vines planted in well drained poor soils, which produce really distinctive Pinot Noir. Both vineyards struggle to yield much most years, but the small amount that is harvested is of amazing quality.
Vineyards: Knox is a blend of our two “estate” vineyards, Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat. Both vineyards are in the Santa Maria Valley, with Le Bon Climat being located on the southern edge of this appellation. Le Bon Climat was planted in 1998 with low vigor rootstock in some well drained poor soil. This combination of low vigor plants and poor soil limit the crop size and slow ripening.
The grapes from both Bien Nacido and Le Bon Climat were harvested in the early morning and vineyard sorted. Once destemmed, the must was fermented in open top 5 ton fermenters and punched down twice daily to extract all the “good stuff” from the grapes. After fermentation finished, the must was pressed and pumped into 100% new François Frères french oak barrels. The wine was kept in these barrels for 22 months, except for a gentle racking after one year. The best lots were blended then bottled without filtration. The clarity and color of this wine are beautiful.
Weather in 2020: Central and Southern California had an outstanding harvest, with a long, even growing season and normal-size crop.

Tasting Note: The 2020 Pinot Noir Knox Alexander is a barrel selection of Santa Maria sites, mostly from Bien Nacido, that spent two years in 100% new French oak. This is an especially floral, lifted style with a fair amount of stems and plenty of Santa Maria savoriness. It's an eccentric wine, but all the elements are nicely balanced. Orange peel, mint, star anise and bright acids linger on the delicate yet persistent finish. - Tasted by Antonio Galloni
