🎃🍇 Which bottle are you opening for Halloween?🍇👻

I'm looking for something red, full-bodied, warming, and rich, packed with flavours of black cherry, raisins, baking spice, cocoa, vanilla, and to***co. If this sounds like your cup of tea, then you'll love our W**e of the Week: Amarone della Valpolicella by Scuola Grande.

Our example of Veneto's grandest w**e is produced from Corvina, Corvinone, and Rondinella grapes that undergo appassimento, translating from Italian to 'withering'. This signature method for Amarone of sun drying the grapes at harvest on straw mats before fermenting imparts the unctuous concentration and dried fruit notes that these w**es are famed for.

With a powerful, enticing flavour and long, creeping finish, I'll be soaking up the atmosphere and answering knocks at the door on the 31st with a glass of this in hand. Happy Halloween from us at Cavavin Hertford!

What sets apart a Bordeaux Supérieur?

Our latest w**e of the week is the perfect example! Both Bordeaux PDO and Bordeaux Supérieur AOC w**es can source fruit from all around the region, offering more affordable and laid-back bottles than the top appellations such as Margaux or Pomerol. However, Bordeaux Supérieur is held to higher quality standards than regular Bordeaux. These w**es require excellent fruit from certified growers and a minimum of 9 months aging in oak, so typically show greater softness and flavour concentration.

Chateau Queyssard is a simple and clear expression of what makes a Supérieur, with a full 12 months in barrel. The w**e is comprised of 80% Merlot, giving luxurious body and ripe flavours of plum and blackberry, which are elevated in brightness, structure, and aromatics by 20% Cabernet Franc in the blend, complemented by a touch of spice from the oak. Treat yourself to a steak frites (I like a bavette cut if you can find it), pour out a glass to swirl around, and voilà, you've brought the bistro experience home 🇫🇷

One of our best value w**es is back in stock!

I have an unfortunate habit. There are some w**es we carry that are too easy to love at their price for me not to recommend to just about everyone. Inevitably, people love them, come back for more, and these w**es end up shifting fast. Today's feature, the outstanding Domaine du Royaume Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sure Lie, is one of the worst offenders.

Muscadet is a sometimes forgotten gem made from Melon Blanc grapes grown around Nantes by the Atlantic coast. Any marked as 'sur lie' spend time aging on the leftover yeasts from fermenting, giving a slightly fuller texture and very gentle aroma of rising dough. That, alongside the refined and fragrant lemon, pear, and honeydew flavours makes them a classic pairing for seafood such as mussels, oysters and langoustines. Pick up a bottle while you can! 🦞🍾

🍇🍷It's the last time we mention Beaujolais before November...
..and when November does come, it'll be time for the annual Beaujolais Nouveau craze. That's not what you're looking at this week though. While still 100% Gamay as all Beaujolais reds must be, Cru Beaujolais from the mere 10 villages that produce it such as this Brouilly by Domaine Saint-Lager represent the highest quality grade that the region has to offer. They're an entirely different beast in which more subtlety, texture, and elegance can be found than in their more youthful counterparts.

Expect medium body, aromas of blackberry, strawberry, violet, slate, and cedar with a particularly agreeable freshness in the palate, and a pleasant length to the finish. A wonderful w**e for which to set aside a quiet moment in cool breeze under the browning leaves. 🍂

A failsafe favourite from southern Italy 🇮🇹

The grape variety Falanghina is very much at home in the Italian region of Campania, with reported use in w**emaking dating back to ancient times there. We're lucky enough to import Piantaferro's offering of this w**e directly, and for our purposes, it makes a fantastic everyday w**e that's easy to love if you're in the mood to try something a little different this week.

Ripening beautifully in persistent warmth on Italy's Thyrrenian coastline, and undergoing a controlled temperature fermentation, the result is a pure representation of the grape's character. Light to medium body, a slightly fleshy texture, and bursting fruit aromas of ripe apple, pear, and nectarine, elevated with a very appealing hit of citrus blossom. Try it out and tell us what you think!

❓When was the last time you drank a Rioja❓

In spite of spending plenty of time near w**e, even for me it had been a while. In fact, always wanting to try something different or new means that with how familiar Rioja is, I can go a long time without tasting one. However, with a reminder of why this region is so highly regarded when we opened one at our tasting last week, I had to treat myself to a bottle for the weekend, and loved every sip.

Our Gran Logrado Reserva is classic Rioja through and through. Fantastic intensity in its aromas with hearty body and dizzying list of flavours between strawberry, blackberry, cherry, toast, vanilla, clove, to***co and more! With that said, it's rare to find one this good without breaking the bank. Quality, well-ripened fruit from the slopes of the Alavesa enjoys time to ferment slowly at a slightly cooler temperature, bringing out its full character while keeping brightness to the flavour. The result is the kind of w**e that puts a smile on your face 😋
