It's been a while since we last took a moment to feature a sparkling. We can fix that 🥂

Regular visitors to the shop have likely seen me talk about this one before; it's one of my favourites to show off, with impressive balance, a satisfying palate, and quality that punches far above its price point. This is Dibon Cava Brut Seleccion, imported directly by us from Barcelona.

In recent years it feels as though Cava has fallen by the wayside in popularity. We think this is a pity considering how good these wines grown higher on the slopes around Catalunya can be. Using the traditional grapes for the style, and undergoing the same double-fermentation method as used for Champagne, Crémant, and Franciacorta, this one offers notable lemon, honeysuckle and citrus blossom aromas, along with delicate flavours of peach and dough. That's all with a good stream of soft-textured bubbles and plenty of vibrancy. You know where to find it! 🍇

Most weeks, I like to show you the bottles you could happily open without needing a big occasion.

Today though, I'm in the mood for showing off a little, so here is a bit of red wine royalty; this is Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Volnay 2023. The village of Volnay sits in the centre of wind-sheltered, sun-exposed slopes at between 200 and 400 metres elevation, amounting to only 212 hectares. Tucked between Pommard and Meursault on Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, the land carries an ancient history of fine winemaking, with the majority of Volnay claiming coveted premier cru status.

From world-class Pinot Noir terroir and outstanding winemaking expertise, we have a medium-bodied red with a balanced 13% abv and fine acidity, bound with a little supple tannin and matched with excellent flavour intensity. Lifted aromas of blackberry, violets, and cherries in gorgeous harmony, underpinned with a touch of spice and woodland earth. This one's in its youth but already drinking well, and will continue to develop beautifully for at least another 10 years.

New Zealand has far more to offer than just Sauvignon Blanc!

If any winery is fit to prove this, then it should be Mission Estate, the first winery to ever be established on New Zealand soil. The truth is that a whole host of different grapes, from Grüner Veltliner to Pinot Noir, to Merlot, to Albariño can all thrive in the mild, sheltered maritime climate and enviably mineral-rich soils that the country's winemaking territory has to offer.

We challenge you to take a step away from Marlborough's flagship grape this week and give Mission's Hawkes Bay Chardonnay a try. A gorgeous marriage of uplifting red apple flesh, lemon peel, and white peach flavours are met with a delicate hit of toast and cream, all patiently sitting on the palate for an excellent finish. Pure quality👌🇳🇿

Not sure what you're looking at? Each bottle of wine that we directly import gets one tiny white label on the back, and each double dot on the tape is one label done.

Not just to demonstrate a less glamorous, but surprisingly cathartic side to wine in labelling bottles, what you see is the trophy earned after putting out a new shipment from France. Over 250 labels across over 50 boxes are a sign that a whole bunch of returning favourites and new wines have just arrived and are ready for you to discover, including the gorgeous Lussac Saint-Émilion pictured. It's the best time you could ask for to stop by and see what else we have in store.

Some family of mine have just got home from a holiday in the Loire. What better time could there ever be to talk about what the region has to offer? ✈

The river carves westward through winemaking territory all the way from the fragrant Sauvignon Blanc of Sancerre in the heart of France to the quenching Muscadet of Nantes on the western coast. Throughout can be found a truly astonishing variety of very different wines, all of which of course need sampling.

An underrated specialty and personal favourite are the reds produced from Cabernet Franc; an ancestor of the legendary Cabernet Sauvignon, but with a notably brighter edge of red fruit and somewhat lighter body than the champion of the Médoc peninsula. This Saumur Champigny by Domaine Filliatreau demonstrates that character beautifully with generous fruit flavours of red cherry, raspberry, and plum melting together in a soft, yet finely structured palate with surprising depth and a mildly spicy edge. Well worth a try!

To say that I have a soft spot for fortified wines is an understatement. With my unashamed bias, today we're banging the drum for Bella Luna Amontillado by Bodegas Sanchez Romate.

Many people will have only ever tried the famous Cream Sherries, with vivid memories of heady sweetness and a boxing day hangover. However, of the eight different styles of Sherry produced in Andalucía, all with an astounding respect for tradition and artistry, the majority are very dry. While some would argue that dry Sherry is an acquired taste, Amontillado is a great place to start, offering a perfect halfway house between the extremes of Fino and Oloroso.

The Bella Luna offers a mesmerising cocktail of orange peel, fig, sultana, and roasted hazelnut aromas on an exceptionally drying, saline, and tingling palate. Exceptional for sitting back on a warm evening with a bowl each of almonds and olives 🫒🥂
