This is the kind of Christmas time tradition I can get used to.
For the second year I am fortunate to be able to put these side by side, and compare the two of them with each other at the same time.
Unfortunately, this is not the best glass-wear, but sometimes you just have to work with the tools you are given.
These two Belgian Monasteries, and these two quads, have a rich and interlocking history over the last nearly 200 years. Too much to go into here, but in essence - beer has been brewed at the Saint Sixtus Monastery (Westvleteren) since 1838, with a brief spell of them 'outsourcing' brewing to St Bernadus after WW2 until 1992 when brewing returned to Saint Sixtus to maintain/retain Trappist status.
Both beers are great, full of dark fruit & caramel flavours. Think Christmas pudding/cake in a bottle. The Westvleteren is slightly darker in colour, with the St Bernadus being more lively out of the bottle and into the glass.
They are similar, but also very different. Overall, the Westvleteren wins it for me. It's smoother, richer, fruitier. There's dried fruit, cherries, dark sugar, rich caramel in abundance, alongside a hint of almonds.
Looking forward to next Christmas for another side-by-side.
