As we celebrate 70 years of SPAR in the UK, it feels like the perfect time to share a few of them.

A huge thank you to Nick for sharing photos from his family’s incredible 44 years running SPAR stores in Durrington and Boscombe Down, to Nykki for this brilliant holiday snap outside a SPAR in Austria in the 80s, and to SPAR Ballingarry for sharing a fantastic throwback of their store.

70 years means a lot of memories – and we love hearing the stories behind them. 💚

There’s been a lot of talk lately about fuel prices, and I want to address it directly.

Independent petrol stations are being hit hard right now. Contrary to some of the comments you may see, we are not “ripping people off.”

Fuel pricing is driven by global factors, wholesale costs fluctuate constantly based on what’s happening in the world, not by independent retailers deciding to increase margins.

You may notice cheaper fuel in places like Penzance or at large supermarket sites. These businesses often sell fuel bought at earlier, lower prices, and more importantly, they have the scale and additional revenue streams to absorb losses on fuel to bring customers through the door.
Independent sites don’t have that luxury.

The price on our forecourt has to reflect what we’ll pay for the next delivery. If we sell too cheaply, we’re simply operating at a loss — and that’s not sustainable for any small business.

So before jumping to conclusions, please understand the reality behind the pricing.

Independent petrol stations are part of local communities, employing local people and supporting local economies.

Like everyone else, we’re navigating a tough economic climate.

If you can, support your local independent, it makes more of a difference than you might think.

We’d also like to say a genuine thank you to our local customers who have supported us over the years and continue to do so, it really does mean a lot.

Today we say a fond farewell to someone very special. After an incredible 34 years of dedication, hard work, and friendly service, Liz is retiring from Connor Downs Spar.

For more than three decades, Liz has been a familiar face behind the counter, always greeting customers with a smile and going above and beyond to help our community. Your kindness, loyalty, and sense of humour have made such a difference—not just to the shop, but to everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing you.

We’ll all miss seeing you every day, but we’re excited for you to enjoy this new chapter of life. Thank you for everything you’ve done—you’ve truly left your mark here at Connor Downs. 💙

The same individual who stole fuel from us earlier this week has struck again—this time at Westways Filling Station in Newquay.

We're beyond frustrated. It's disheartening to run a small, local business and feel completely unsupported. Devon & Cornwall Police , where are you? We’ve reported this repeat offender, but the response continues to be that it’s “not worth the investigation.”

Yet Cornwall Council continues to collect business rates from us—a portion of which is meant to support local policing. So where is the support for small businesses like ours?

It’s time for the authorities to step up and protect the very communities that keep them funded.

He’s competing in the UK Ultras South Downs 100 mile run in aid of mesothelioma uk, in memory of his mum, our Sue Thomas. He’s already raised so much money for the cause, but you can still donate on his just giving page or pop some money in the pots on our counters. He starts at 12! Good luck Mark! We’re all so proud of you!
