🍷 In The Know
2022 Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie Cru ‘Clisson’ – Domaine de la Bretonnière, Loire Valley, France
What a half term it’s been — sunshine, outdoor living, al fresco dining and temperatures more reminiscent of the Mediterranean! With the weekend now in sight, George’s choice is all about rewarding yourself after a glorious week in the sunshine.
And yes, water first in this heatwave… but if a chilled bottle is being opened later, this is exactly the sort of wine you’ll want in the fridge.
Muscadet is often underestimated, yet wines like this beautifully demonstrate just how refined and satisfying the Loire’s best examples can be. This Cru Clisson from Domaine de la Bretonnière is crisp, mineral and quietly complex — tailor-made for warm evenings, seafood suppers and relaxed outdoor dining.
Produced from old Melon de Bourgogne vines grown on Clisson’s granite-rich soils, the wine combines freshness with remarkable texture and depth thanks to extended ageing on its lees.
✨ Tasting Notes
Pale and luminous in the glass, with aromas of green melon, white peach and delicate floral notes layered with hints of fresh bread and subtle creaminess. The palate is textured yet vibrant, balancing richness with bright acidity and a long, mineral finish that keeps everything wonderfully refreshing.
🌿 About the Producer
Led by Bertrand Cormerais, Domaine de la Bretonnière has earned a reputation for expressive, terroir-driven Muscadet. This Cru Clisson spends more than 40 months ageing on its lees, creating impressive complexity and mouthfeel while preserving purity and freshness.
🍽️ Seasonal Food Pairings
Perfect with oysters, grilled prawns, crab, sea bass or seafood in delicate sauces. It’s also superb with goat’s cheese, summer salads and lighter dishes enjoyed outdoors as the evenings stay warm well into the night.
If Chablis is your usual summer white, this could be your next warm-weather discovery — elegant, mineral and effortlessly cooling in the sunshine.
