2023 Vasilikon Winery, Xynisteri Single Vineyard, Cyprus - £25.99

This is drinking superbly! There is a lovely weight (almost Semillon weight) and richness. Half an hour decant and there is a delicious stone fruit character and great balance. It’s certainly something a little different and a cracker for anybody adventurous.

Perched in the Cyprian hilltop village of Kathikas in Paphos, Vasilikon Winery has been making wine since 1993. It’s run by three brothers—Heracles, Giorgos, and Yiannis Kyriakides—who turned their family’s vineyards into one of Cyprus’s most respected wineries. The vines sit at 650–700 metres above sea level, where the cool mountain air, limestone-rich soils, and sea breezes from the Akamas Peninsula give their wines freshness and character.

The Xynisteri grapes come from Vasilika, a vineyard just outside the village of Kathikas, planted back in 1965. The old vines give the wine impressive concentration and depth. Half of it is aged in 300- and 400-litre oak barrels, adding subtle texture and complexity.

2024 Vincent Paris Granit Blanc £24.99

What a lovely little wine!

A bright clean white from Vincent Paris in the northern Rhône. Although Paris is best known for his Cornas reds, the grapes for this wine comes from vines planted on granite soils.

The blend is mainly Viognier with some Roussanne, giving a mix of ripe stone-fruit and floral aromas balanced by freshness and a subtle mineral edge. Think apricot, peach, white flowers, and a clean, lightly textured finish rather than anything heavy or oaky.

It’s made in small quantities, drinks well young, and works beautifully as an aperitif or with seafood, chicken, or creamy dishes.

Birthdays are always a treat and worth digging deep, so our end of day treat was!

2012 The Sadie Family Die Ouwingerdreeks ‘Kokerboom’

It’s 14 years old Semillon with still loads of acidity, to start they was a touch of oxidation but after half an hour decant the wine gained in apple and white fruit and lost some of the oxidation. Another half an hour later even more richness and breadth but still really zippy acidity. This bottle was showing some age but what else would you expect from a 14 year old white wine.

A real treat to drink old vine wine with bottle age :)

Eben Sadie notes…
The Kokerboom vineyard consists of around 80% white Green Grape and 20% red Green Grape. We pick them together and press them simultaneously. The wine is one of the richest wines we produce with pure volume and massive texture.

The grapes are picked in the Citrusdal Mountains and it does require a major load of logistics to get the grapes down to the winery: the journey to the vineyard takes about 4 and a half hours so we only return to the cellar at the end of the day.

2022 Domaine Chofflet Givry Heritage Rouge - £33.99

What a cracker! This is a delicious Burgundy, silky smooth lovely rich fruit. Text book Pinot Noir and a brilliant example of great value ( for Burgundy 😉) Pinot Noir.

From Domaine Chofflet in Givry, this is a bright, charming Burgundy with plenty of fresh red-fruit character. “Héritage” captures the classic Côte Chalonnaise style: supple, inviting and made for drinking.

The nose is full of red cherry, raspberry and a hint of violet. On the palate it’s juicy and finely balanced, with soft tannins and a clean line of freshness that keeps the fruit lively. Gentle spice and a touch of earthiness add subtle depth without weighing it down. The finish is smooth, lightly savoury and very moreish.

A lovely, easy Burgundian red…

2023 Domaine Girardin Rully Vielles Vignes Blanc - £42.99

With Burgundy season upon us we thought it would be fun to highlight some of our older vintages.

Rully, a charming village in the northern part of the Chalonnaise, offers excellent value compared to the pricier Côte de Beaune nearby. Vincent Girardin’s 2023 Rully Vielles Vignes Blanc is of course made entirely from Chardonnay, presenting a vibrant, rounded profile with fresh fruit character. The bouquet reveals notes of honeysuckle, elderflower, white peach, and subtle flint. On the palate, it delivers a rich texture highlighted by toasty oak, culminating in a refined and elegant finish.

That’s a wrap on 2025 and just a quick thank you for all the love and support. We have done some amazing tastings this year and sold some pretty amazing wines, if we do say so ourselves.

2013 V***e Fourny et Fils Clos Faubourg Notre Dame Extra Brut - £139

Emmanuel and Charles-Henry Fourny are making some of the most exciting wines in Champagne and are emerging as stars of their generation. They now own and lease (from other family members) some 20 hectares of 1er Cru vineyards in the Côte de Blancs and all exclusively from the limestone and pure chalk soils of Vertus. The hallmark of their wines is freshness, elegance and purity.

Bone dry but a delicious roundness from age, wonderful ripe citrus notes, minerality and above all an exceptional length on the palate. A Champagne made from Chardonnay harvested by hand and sourced exclusively from the property’s enclosed vineyard.

Happy New Year and see you in 2026.

We have built up quite a following for our Barbero chocolates but this this year we also added their Panettone and it sold out almost instantly.

Here we served it with a rather tasty glass of Moscato a perfect match fresh and light and the Panettone was so delicate and light.

Buon Natale

2013 Wayfarer Golden Mean Pinot Noir £144.99

A treat wine for sure and this was my Christmas Day wine…. Still lots of silky fruit, just a little hint of of alcohol when first opened but this merged in nicely with 30 minutes in a decanter. It has such a lovely richness and such a soft spicy red fruit but verging on dark fruits.

Wayfarer is born in a wild place, just 4 miles from the pacific coast but 1,100 feet above sea level. Nestled amongst the redwoods and mountain roads are some of regions most extreme vineyards. Wayfarer was designed around 30 one acre blocks each one for a specific individual clone. All the grapes are handpicked as whole bunches before sunrise and taken to the winery. Vinification is done with a velvet touch so gentle pressing, carefully racking and natural yeasts.

Golden Mean Pinot Noir – is a blend of Pommard and Swan clones (Joseph Swan was gifted some DRC cuttings from the La Tache vineyard back in the late 1960’s but he also probably planted some Mt. Eden at the same time). But yes it has the power of the Pommard clone and the elegance of the Swan clone. It is finished off in 33% new French oak.

Tradition was that the new Poet Laureate was rewarded with a small stipend and a butt of Sherry. First time was 1630 to Ben Johnson. Sadly in 1790 Henry James Pye gave up his butt for a payment of £27 per year and the tradition was lost. Fast forward to 1984 and the El Consejo Regulador restarted the tradition to mark 600 years of trade between to two countries when Ted Hughes was appointed Poet Laureate. This is the butt Simon Armitage selected on his visit to sign his own barrel. A cream Sherry from Delgado Zuleta based in Sanlucar de Barrameda (home of Manzanilla). Some bottles were donated to raise funds in the name of poetry and now I know why a cheeky glass or two was drunk during “The Poet Laureate Has Gone to His Shed”.

Friday Uncorked Review #15

2011 Cantina Terlan Nova Domus Riserva Magnum £160

Wow what a wine ! A customer suggested this was passed it and should have been drunk years ago.

So we thought we better check where it was in its evolution. We bought this as a library release a few years ago, so had been in their cellars until reaching us.

No fear fresh as a daisy but lovely complexity, you can see the Sauvignon but some depth from the Chardonnay and freshness from the Pinot Bianco, pretty impressive to think 14 years old.

Cantina Terlano is one of tle oldest Alto Adige cooperatives and is well known for producing Italy’s longest lived white wines. The longevity of their wines is due to a combination of the high mineral content of the soils, old vines, carefully managed vineyards with low yields per vine, and the rigorous selection of heathy and fully mature grapes.

Wine-making in Terlano traditionally involves the use of wooden barrels. Special emphasis is also placed on the “sur lie” method, with the wines often left to age on the yeast for years before being bottled and left to slowly mature to perfection. This slow maturation process gives the wines their specific character and complexity. The focus is on developing the complex secondary and tertiary aromas rather than the primary aromas.

Nova Domus is a powerful and complex cuvée of 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. This distinct Terlano cuvée is a full-bodied multifaceted mineral wine that takes years of aging in the bottle to achieve its full potential.
