At 93 years young, John is a Waitrose Partner who claims it’s his role that continues to put a spring in his step.

John happily works at the Exeter store three days a week, where he works on the tills, chatting to customers and serving the queue of regulars who line up to see him. It’s these top-tier customer service skills that have earned John his status as a local celeb.🎉

"There must be enough remembering to make our successors take care that it never happens again." That was the message our founder John Spedan Lewis had for our Partners in his VE Day message in our inhouse magazine, the Gazette in 1945. Spedan poignantly reflected that it was "heart-breaking to think how easily this war might have been prevented and how hideous has been its cost in life". But he voices hope for the future, too, saying "Let us now fix our eyes on the future and try to do our bit for the world of tomorrow."

Eighty years later, as we remember all those who served in WWII, it's still a message that resonates.

This is just the sweetest story! 🥰

Emma, from Waitrose Sandbach, kindly gave an “It’s on us” of some lobster from the Meat & Fish counter for a little boy who was eager to try it! 🦞A few days later, he came back with a lovely card and flowers to thank Emma for her sweet gesture, and he made sure to tell her how much he enjoyed it! 😋

We are so pleased that the little boy and his mum left the store with big smiles, all thanks to Emma's kindness. Well done, Emma!💚
